HI,
On my 75 its hard to get to the top of the bolts that hold the down pipe on.. is there a way to attach studs or something to hold them while you attach the down pipe to bolt it up?? welding taping for studs??? what do you folks do??

On my 4.7 Dodge Dakota I used JB weld to glue the nut to the cast manifold. I couldn't get to it for some reason. Had to wait a day for the JB to cure but it helped me get it back together.

In a lot of cases I'll use a brass nut on those bolts to make someone's life easier down the road when it has to come apart again.

What engine in what car ? Besides doing similar work decades ago, I just did such a job last year and had zero problem.

I like that idea only maybe I'll use bolts from the top with the JB weld to hold them in .. and can use nuts from the bottom....

With the proper tools and technique there should not be too much difficulty. I usually remember a bitch job, and having done the same exact job last year, nothing comes to mind, sorry. Why can't you hold-back ?

HI,
Working from the ground with Jack stands can't get the right angle to get both hands up there.. might be different if it had a lift. but I'm front/back yard on my own stuff..

How tall are your jack stands? I got tired of the old cheap stamped steel 3 legged ones and got a set of the formed steel with 4 legs that go up to nearly 24"! Made my life much better but yeah, a lift might help. Thing is, if the bolt from the top spins....gotta hold it somehow. Your manifolds are not threaded? Been so long since I messed with stock manifolds that I don't remember plus I usually got rid of those and installed headers.

HI,
yeah I've thought about headers , but they make so much under hood heat, can't afford ceramic coating .. there's not much in an affordable range for budget builds.. I could wrap them i guess.. even cheap ones are like 700$$ + install you have to remove tie rod I think to run it thru headers on the B body's.. an a shop wants $1000.oo to install (I already have duels fairly new) and they won't install cheap headers, they want a thick flange ...

Shoot....did all of mine myself and it wasn't all that hard. Yeah, some headers you have to jack up the engine some (well most lol) but that's not all that hard either. And having a thick flange isn't always needed if you know how to deal with the thinner flanges.

Actually, that's how I did the job last year, and I'm in my 8th decade of existence. Just use the proper tool for your holdback ( ex. box-end wrench, socket on a breaker bar, etc.) sorry I can't be more specific because a job like that to me is like turning a doorknob, do it without thinking.
