Are these valve covers reversed? Seems to me that bracket on the driver side should be supporting the heater hoses.

I would flip them. Before one person gets a chance to see it

Go to a show , pop that hood and claim one of one status.

You have a bunch of spaghetti there! Buy ends for the wires going into distributor and a crimper, it'll neatin' things up.

reverse rotation?

I know, those wires were put in by the previous owner and they are new. Once I get this on the road and I’m sure it’s gonna be ok, I’m going to get better wires. Everything was F’d up when I bought the car. The guys handling the estate tried to get it running. All the wires on the distributer were not in correct firing order and they couldn’t get it running.

I thought so. They don't seem to be leaking, you think I should use the old ones?
Is it worth trying to tap this out and either put another stud in there or use a bolt? Also while I had the valve cover off, is there anyway to tighten up these rockers? There is some side to side movement and the pushrods turn with ease. Shouldn’t the pushrods have some resistance to them?

Yes, you need to remove the broken stud. You can use either an easy out, or, if your lucky, a left handed drlll bit.

Your valve cover will leak otherwise. Option two is replace the head. If you don't feel comfortable drilling it out, take it to a trusted shop

Looks like somebody tried to drill it, look off center?
Edit: Started on center looks like drill drifted.

This was how it was handled in the past. I’m trying to drill it out, but holy sheet, I’m not even scratching the damn thing.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I'm going to have to try a different drill bit. I bought a new DeWalt that says its for metal. It wont make a dent.

I have met the enemy, and I am there's. I gave up trying to get this stud out. I tried to drill it out, got a nice hole, but could not get a screw extractor to take it out. I know the stud probably did not break in there straight and it was a bitch trying to drill it. But I think I will glue the gasket on, let it dry for 24 hours, then do the same on the top end. Whomever broke it was able to install the valve cover without any leaks, and I was thinking the switch of the valve covers was not a mistake. I'm thinking they found the wrong side one probably sealed better. I guess I can always come back and visit this problem in the future.

Some pushrods will turn by hand. The rockers will move a bit, side to side. The bits in the pic look a bit dirty to me.
The broken bolt / stud, needs fixing. Just my experience with my 318. But the stud / bolt thing, experience, comes from British motorcycles.

Well, the car hasn't been on the road since 1984. I was told that the original engine was a 383, but at some point, was replaced with another 383. But all in all, its really not that bad. I cant wait to take it out and let if get up to full operation temp and hopefully flush away any dirt or grime from sitting all that time. Having said that, it could be another couple of weeks before that happens. Theres allot of gremlins, as usual and I'm working to sort them all out.

Be brave. My camper van had been sitting for many years.
We went to the Arctic Ocean for a test run. When we got back, and I was able to have a closer inspection, I was surprised we made it.
We went to Yellowstone and Bonneville last year, and many places inbetween.
