I am going to buy a detroit true track or locker for my 742 case and just wondered what part number you used? I looked on Summit and they didn't break it down into case numbers. Thanks in advance.

Does it Make any difference what case
the carrier is put in?

I never thought it did.

I do not recall that it does except maybe the carrier bearings
for different carriers but it was not case sensitive.

all carriers interchange between all the cases 741 , 742 , 489 the only difference is the carrier bearings the 25590 /25520 bearing has a 1.796 I.D. for the earlier carriers ( pre 1969 ) and the LM104912/ LM104949 has a 2.000 I.D. for the later carriers ( post 1969 ) ,,,, the O.D. is the same for both bearings ,, it should say in the Locker or True Trac description which carrier bearing is needed ,, more than likely it will be the LM104912 / LM104949 ,,,, when you order your bearing kit make sure it has the correct carrier bearings for what ever unit you will be using ,i personally really like the Eaton Detroit Locker # ETN 187SL14A which is mechanical lock up not really a fan of the Eaton True Trac units #913A572

Me too. I like tru tracs as well. It'll just depend on how much I want to spend and what's in stock. I'm just cleaning up the case and pinion bearings, replacing the seal and installing the posi, setting backlash. Axle bearings and seals are new already.
Thanks for the info guys.
