I have a 67 Coronet with a 1979 440 in it. I am looking at installing an intake on it. So trying to figure out how much room I have under the hood. So trying to find out measurements.

So I google stock intake manifold height on 440 engine and they gave me a measurement of 1 3/4 inches. I also found on the internet how to measure it yourself. So from the base of the carberator lay a flat edge out to the front of the engine block deck, so I am assuming the cross over bridge between your heads where your valley pan bolts onto and I came up with 3 inches.

Any ways I am looking at a Performer RPM 7193 which they say is at 5 3/8 height or a Performer 2191 which they say is a 4 5/16 height Right now with the stock intake and my carb I have 4 inches between the top of the card where the aircleaner sits to my hood. How much room will I have to fit an air cleaner if I go with any one of these manifolds.

I am just not sure if my measurements are correct on the stock intake. Now that being said it is a stock 440 intake but it is not the right intake for the 79 block because it does not have to ports to line up with the heat ports coming off the head. So I am assuming its an earlier 70's intake. Is there another way to measure these things or am I doing it right?

Thanks
Bruce

It'll fit with a drop base air cleaner. And those " heat ports" are open all the same on every stock port dodge big block head. They are always like that.

Thanks, so what I am trying to figure out is once the intake and carb is installed, how much room between the top of the carb to my hood?

Like if I measured correctly and my manifold right now is considered a 3 inch height and I have 4 inches right now above my carb then if I go with the RPM manifold that would bring my carb up another 2 3/8 inches so then I would need an air cleaner that would have a height of 1 5/8 inches above the drop. So far I have looked and the lowest is 2.5 inches I think. That's if I am measuring the correct way.

My 67 wagon, 440/Performer RPM/Holley 780/Drop base filter. Just a little less than 1" between the lid and hood.

Thanks, that sounds like you have lots of room under the hood. I just don't want to order stuff and then find out it does not fit because it would be costly to return. My car was originally a 318 car, so once again not knowing dodges very much did they have a different motor mounts on the cross member. Or were all the mounts the same? Just wondering if my motor is sitting up higher then it should be.

I will be pulling the engine because I want to paint the engine compartment and also repaint the engine because the guy who built it painted it blue. I also want to install headers so that will be the time to do it and also make any changes that need to be done.

Thanks
Bruce

Something like this, in general.

Kframes are the same, 440s are 440s, unless you have some custom homemade mounts, it's all the same as everyone else.

The Performer RPM is 1.6” taller than the stock intake manifold.

As an FYI, this style of drop base pretty much fits Holley's with center feed bowls only. To use it on AFB's, TQ's and some others, it needs to be spaced up almost an inch. There is a drop base unit, can't remember who makes it, that will fit just about anything. It looks like it was formed over a huge Bagel.

I have an Edelbrook Carb on there now, which might just end up staying. Not a carb fan, I like the aftermarket fuel injection systems out there now. Have used a couple over the years but not sure if I want to spend that much money again switching it over. Is this the base you were talking about? This would be a 1 1/2 inch drop.

 good call, when I think of muscle car carbs I go straight to holleys.

Drop bases are fine but as mentioned you have to watch for fuel inlet and trans linkage room.
My 67 coronet has the 2191 preformer , the 1/4" thick heat resistant fiber base gasket.
Thermoquad and a 3" air cleaner regular base. I still have a little over 1" of clearance.

The 2191 Performer is .5”-.6” taller than factory iron, 1” shorter than the RPM.

Yup, thats the style of base you need for the AFB, T/Q, AVS and some others. Pretty much fits them all with the 5.125" opening. From there, watch the filter element height. On that MP unit on my car, it's not 14" diameter. 13 and change. I believe, will have to verify, that I'm using a WIX 42044 element. A little less than 3" tall.
