I am trying to find out info an engine I am looking at in a vehicle. It may be a 66 year but can't be sure if it was changed. Where would the numbers be to see if it is a 361 or not. Thanks for any help.

On a B block there's and angled pad by the distributor. RB block there's a parallel to the ground pad.

On the low block engine, look for a pad below the distributor opening as shown in the following image:

A "36" present denotes a 361. A "38" denotes 383. If the deck has been machined, these markings might be gone.

What does the VIN say the car should have?

5th digit-

C= 225
D= 273
E= 318
F= 361
G= 383 (all four barrels in 66)
H= Hemi

A 66 would be B361.
Thank you but thought it was F for 361. In my case the new engine in it was told isn't the original engine, so looking to see what is in it but as of now do not see any numbers on the pad of the engine to identify it.

"F" for 361 is on the VIN plate; this example show "H" which in '66 meant a Hemi.

"B" stamped into the engine ID pad for a 1966; "36" stamped in for a 361.
If stamped, these and the other numbers can be lost as @Vaanth states if the block had to be decked/milled down for whatever reason

This example, though a bit difficult to see, is a 1964 361

Thank you Mark that is very helpful. It turns out the number on the new engine that was installed is a 383 and not the 361 the car had when new. Thank you all for the help on finding the info I needed. It was well appreciated.
