I having difficultly connecting some dots on the car's original color. Basically, I can get a perspective of original color from overspray areas, engine bay, jams, etc. But when I look at the color code and related chips, it doesn't match with my eyes. I'm pretty certain that the car wasn't perfectly repainted... it was a beater I dragged out of a junk yard in Alabama someone rattle canned black.

Anywhos... Here are some pics and I'm asking two questions, actually.

1) Can you point me to the original color (not just the code, but the paint chip) and,
2) I'd like to repaint it some form of yellow... an original Mopar color, but perhaps from a different year... so open to recommendations. I like the yellow I'm seeing and what appears to be the original color, but again, it doesn't seem to match the paint code chip.

Ok... three questions:
3) BTW... why does the code say "GY4", but all the paint chips I can find are just "Y-4"... I'm assuming that's because I'm looking at the wrong chips?

All the paint codes I have seen start with G, but not the color chips. Going back to stock color is cool, especially if it was not a common color back then. Look around online and you might find some Y4 cars to get an idea of what it looks like. My 72 Sat was Y1 Top Banana. Yellow is not a color I like, not even a little. It is now Q5 Corral Turquoise, not a common color back then.

Y4 Charger

The prefix G means that particular color was introduced in 1971. Some colors were reformulated and used the same last two digits over again.
Best example is EB5 which was introduced in 1969, and used also in 1970. In 1971 it was reformulated and tagged as GB5. Both are shown on the corresponding year paint color chips as B5, but are slightly different.

First letter indicate the first year that particular paint formula was used. Second letter, (or only) and number is the color.
Example: B5 is blue. EB5 might be a different formula than GB5. They'd both be blue, but could be different.
My paint in 69 was 96 (mid year color added), then it disappeared for 1970, came back as EL5 In 71, but E indicated 1969 as first year used.
G indicates 71.
Oh well late as usual. OneOfMany covered it all..... but I didn't see his post.

Color is such a personal color that opinions are going to run rampant. I cannot say I like the Y4, however I do like the Y1 (Top Banana). Look pictures of cars and when you find the right color you will know it, its your car and you need to love it not tolerate it.

There was a 73 color very similar to FY1.
Ever so slightly softer.

Ok, so wow... if that's Y4 in the video, I'm not a fan either... looks dull and like mustard. I like yellow... just not sure which yellow :) Thanks!

Gy4, paint it Y1, you'll be happier.
I'll definately look at that... are you referring to Y1 in 1972? Is it a different color with the same code in other years? sorry for the stupid question... new to paint stuff

This is a '73 RR with Y1 Lemon Twist (top banana yellow for Dodge).

Oh man... I think that's the ticket! It's super yellow. Funny thing too... I'm not what you would call a "fan" of yellow, but I just like the idea of having a retro yellow car from the 70's... call me crazy. And with that black stipe... very cool. My other Charger is dark blue and ratted out, which looks cool and my Coronet is burgundy... so looking to mix it up a bit

Again, the first letter is the first year it was available.

That's why it's important to use all thee characters when discussing Mopar paint.

IMO GY4 is more tan than yellow.
It doesn't match the factory color chips, either.

FY1 is "Lemon Twist/Top Banana" HIP color.

If you like yellow, and wanna be different, there's always EL5. Dodge called it butterscotch, which is pretty accurate.
I bought mine in spite of the color, grew to love it. Pretty rare on a 69 or 71, would have had to be a special order on a 72.
I usually don't recommend it to anyone, other than if it's the original color.

Yeah I'm definitely getting that... more tan than yellow vibe. Which is weird because the car is, well, yellow! (under all the black anyway)

Ok.. so that's super interesting... I showed that color to the family, along with several others and they generally gravitated to the butterscotch.

I think it's coming down to Banana or Butterscotch.

BTW... isn't there a version of yellow called vitamin C?
