When I first sat in a Maverick, I couldn't believe how small it was! The one that had the underdash tray, no glovebox. I remember it being advertised as looking like a muscle car without the dangerous power of a muscle car. I guess the 302 changed that.

That 302 in the maverick was really weak! Not even remotely like the 302 of today, with 50 more years of development. If I remember right, it was well under 200hp, and two barrel only.

They were small, cheap, light, and simple. One step up from a Pinto. Base was $1995 if I remember.

"The standard 1971 Ford 302 V-8 with a two-barrel carburetor was rated at 210 horsepower and 296 lb-ft of torque. The 302 engine was a V8 with a 4.00-inch bore and 3.00-inch stroke and a 9.5:1 compression ratio."

The HP 273's had 235 horse and could wax their azz. They should have taken notes from the old Hypo 289.

The Ford HiPo 289 engine produced 271 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 312 lb-ft of torque at 3,400 rpm

I helped a buddy on his maverick he used to race. Compared to our Dodges , the framerails were basically tinfoil.

A friend of mine had a 271 horse mustang coupe with a four speed (I think the four gear was mandatory) many many years ago. It was impressive.
The 271 was never put in a Falcon or Maverick, but I think you could get one in a Fairlane. It was an nice little engine.

I had the '66 Mustang 2+2 fastback. It was a 289 2 bbl automatic. It would smoke both back tires a kick out the rear end whenever I wanted. Once after school I was taking a couple of friends home and went right around a corner. I sent the back in way out, right as a cop was coming the other way. Of course I didn't see him until after my slide. I came to a stop right next to him and we both rolled our windows down. I remember him saying, "You still haven't learned how to drive yet." I said "I was just messing around." He said, "Don't hit any cars."

That had everything thing to do with my dad being city manager. Cops never messed with me. My friends gave me a rash of shi# being so intitled.

My girlfriend had a used Maverick in 1975. I took it for a while to detail it and change the fluids. I was coming down the street by the high school parking lot right as a friend in his dad's '68 Shelby Mustang pulled right out in front of me. I slammed on the brakes and because her car was such a POS it pulled to the right hard missing the Shelby.

My '66 would be $100K now.

Those Can Ams are fetching $70K now. I want to make one out of our '74 Grand Am. My son says no. That one's a 455. The orange '73 behind it is a built 400. My black '73 is a 455 also. I think you can still buy a '77 LeMans reasonably. Throw in Grand Am quarter windows, a Grand Prix interior, and a Trans Am shaker, and you're good. Yes, that's a mint Dodge Ram 50 in the foreground.

The story on the short run of the Can Ams is, someone broke the mould for the rear spoiler, so they just stopped making them. I'm sure you could get one 3D printed.

All this 302 talk, I took my old Ranchero on the freeway for the first time in years today. Not at all like the later 302s but it got up to 70 mph fairly easily and is always eager to do a little burn out. Seems great as long as I don’t check it against a stopwatch!
