On FB Marketplace, I found some Mopar 68-70 440 906 heads for $400. The add says "68-70 Mopar 906 440 heads been sitting on shelf for a very long time. Have been redone." Yes, it could be a scam...

Good price, or would $300 be reasonable for these heads?

Not in my book. I got a set of awesome 906 heads that are paperweights due to cracks. The cracks make them a big risk plus they are low performance vs aluminum.

If 100% redone and in great shape, I would be happy at $200 - $300 if I REALLY wanted them. In general, I think $100 is about what an average pair is worth - max.

The part that is unknown is “redone”. Without documentation on what was “redone” presume they are nothing more than cores.

But this will be the same issue with nearly any used heads you buy.

The one thing you could do is take a couple springs off. Look for bronze guide/liners and measure stem taper

I got a pair of 906 heads about 5 years ago for $100. They needed to be gone through to be put on a motor. Id say $75-$100 is fair.

IF they are fresh, (a BIG if) and he can prove it (pull a spring, pull a valve out, and look for fresh seats, hopefully still with dykem on em), AND you want em bad!, then maybe worth 3-400.
If not, or he's not willing to pull a valve....... pay core price, $100.
(In california, a proper freshening of a pair of 906s can run from $500-$1000, depending on if valves are needed)

I have six sets of 906's... Gathering dust.... Not worth $100 a pair... I also have a couple sets of 915's, those will probably still attract buyers, but I ain't selling...

If they are serviceable/usable as is and you need heads it's a fair price. If they've been sitting and are rusty, nope.

IF they are redone, and done right, then an asking price of $400 is ok.

Big "IF". Heard that 100 times before. More often than not, untrue.

I wont put any money in iron heads again
I have a set of 906 on the shelf that have had work done to them including 214 181 valves
Aluminum heads are still better

I put $900 into a set of iron heads a while back.
But ONLY because they were professionally ported max wedge heads, and I have an original 426 maxwedge engine.
Would I put money into a set of 906s that weren't oem number and date code matching, on a collector version 440 car? No, no, NO!

Money spent on iron heads will return 25 cents on the dollar.... if you're lucky.

Okay, for a '68 383 run of the day engine that isn't updating (valves, cam, excetera) for aluminum high-performance heads, what are my options for aluminum heads?

I was lucky to get the $60 or $80, I think it was, for a low, low mile set of 906's that were completely done with SFT springs, retainers, etc. Nobody wanted them. The set of 346 heads I got with some other parts went straight to the recycling bin.

The cheapest and stock looking is the 440 source heads

IMHO Only closed chamber iron heads are worth sticking money in. Unless you was build a numbers matching high end car.

The eddys offer 3 chamber sizes 75, 84, & 88 cc's to tailor your compression ratio

I love my RPM heads in 75cc

I've been carting around a few sets of 906's as well. I know I'd never use them. If they really are pro done and fresh then $300 is fine if you want them, otherwise pretty much worthless. Last build with 915's that I gave the works to cost me more than a set of Edelbrocks, in that case it was worth it to me but never again will I do that.

Plus Promaxx, Trick Flow, and speedmaster.
(But speedmaster I believe only offers Victor copies anymore, and they require offset rockers. Not as viable source as others).
