Left foot Brake Driving

What??? I grew up driving vehicles with a manual choke, 3 on the tree, Armstrong non-power steering, and manual brakes. Now tell me again how I never drove a car with a manual choke!!! :poke: :poke: :poke: cr8crshr/Bill :usflag::usflag::usflag:
Kern, is referring to a car that will not continue to run if you take your foot off the gas to apply the brake. Hence left foot on the brake.

My slant six Valiants were prone to this back in the day. Driving in rain, the distributor location led to weak spark from excess moisture. I was was amazed at the improvement, when I bought my first GTX in 1977.

My left foot is also used for a clutch pedal.

If you're paying so little attention to what's going on around you that you need "every extra millisecond" to stop your car...you're doing something wrong. You should see problems - and react to them - LONG before that.
How exactly does pay more attention to a semi you are passing blow a tire, a loose trailer tire coming over the center retaining wall, a tree branch falling in the road way, etc ?
FWIW its worth, at 60 MPH, each millisecond is approximately .8" and if using a left foot braking only saves you a millisecond, you should not be driving.
Also understand the reaction you note above requires one to first see and focus on a problem, interpret that a real problem exists, calculate the best/preferred course of action to mitigate the problem, and finally take the correct physical action. All those milliseconds add up, and those responses vary in time needed among the driving public. People should be encouraged to drive as they determine to be a safe driver in all circumstances. If these time saving methods are indeed a problem, it would be far easier to just to lower the posted speed limit saving hundreds of precious milliseconds.

My first high-performance driving began with racing go karts many decades ago, a sport many top tier F1 drivers also learned and still practice this day in every race.
 
I always have for a variety of reasons. Car doesn't idle, power brake, dirt track racing. I just do it naturally on automatic transmission vehicles. Most of my vehicles are 3 pedals though.
 
60 mph is 88 ft/sec which is 0.088 in/millisec.

I believe your math is also wrong.
A correct answer seems to really be 1.056" per millisecond based on 88Ft (1056") per second at 60 mph

Exactly my point - which is why, as I learned on a track, on a motorcycle, running with MotoGP riders, that you look as far forward as you can. You learn to PREDICT. You learn to RECOGNIZE potential hazards. You move a lane further from that semi, or you step on the gas and spend less time next to it in the first place. You make reactions muscle memory - automatic - and that cuts your reaction time DRASTICALLY.

Rely on your observation of the situation - it's called situational awareness - for your safety. Not some "trick" to save time at the controls. There's a REASON that the "right" way to drive an automatic, is with your right foot only. Many reasons, actually...not least of which being, it eliminates (well, nearly - depends how big your feet are) the chance of pressing the wrong pedal, because you have to move your foot to the pedal you want in the first place. But, if you get used to two foot driving...you don't have the muscle memory to make sure the foot you're pressing on, is on the right pedal in the first place. And in a panic stop situation...honestly tell me you don't plant BOTH feet through the firewall.

How often do people pull out in front of you, in traffic, and you have to jam on the brakes? Me? It NEVER happens. Even on my motorcycle, when me and my entire vehicle are eighteen inches wide and nearly invisible to other drivers.

But, it's not. Because I pay attention, and I see it coming. I look at the wheels on cars at intersections - if those wheels are turning? I assume they're pulling out, and cover my horn, or start to slow down, or change lanes to avoid their potential path when they pull out. And if they aren't turning...I STILL assume they're pulling out. I may only cover the brake instead of using the brake; I may not change lanes...but I'm on alert and I'm ready and I've got my escape route figured out. Same thing for "unpredictables" - I mentally rehearse these things while I'm driving. I know what my reaction will be, depending on where the danger comes from and what my surroundings are (other traffic, guard rails, shoulders, trees, pedestrians, etc). Can you predict it all? Nope. That's why they're called accidents. Best you can do, is prepare yourself for it.

And again, there's a reason the "right" way to drive - the way we're all TAUGHT to drive - is using only your right foot. And the TRUE reason most race drivers left-foot-brake? Isn't for better braking. It's for better ACCELERATION - they can pull out of turns faster if they don't have to move from the brake to the gas. Obviously it's different on dirt tracks, where you use the brake/gas balance to control chassis placement and sliding...much like balancing front and rear brakes on a motorcycle can help you control turn entry and exit by way of how they affect the chassis and suspension behavior. But, last time I checked....we aren't (or shouldn't be) driving so close to the limits on public roads, that we have to "set up" the chassis for a turn entry or exit.

We are taught to use our right foot only, for a reason. "Tricks" like using both feet...well...it reminds me of a line in a movie.

If the shortcut was so great, it would just be "the way".
 
"Situational awareness" means being aware of the situation taking place at that moment.
No human is capable nor has the mental bandwidth to predict and prioritize real time EVERY possible situation.

I suspect with your semantics left foot braking gains the milliseconds needed to prevent the unpredictable accidents that lower bandwidth drivers then your yourself are unable to predict.

That logic would also suggest then, if speeding was so dangerous, all LEO would die in traffic accidents, since they speed nearly all the time.
Bottom line, some people cannot chew gum and walk at the same time. Makes no sense to me to limit everyone's behavior to the lowest common dominator, and call it the "right way"?

It's not semantics.

You pay attention, you save more than milliseconds.

Again - there's a REASON we're taught to use one foot to drive.

If the shortcut was so great....it would just be the way.

But, there's a reason it's just a shortcut. The potential con's outweigh the perceived advantage.
 
For the most part I drive right foot only. (Street. Road racing obviously different story.) But of course there are some situations. Rare, but do arise. And typically not an ideal situation that needs feathering.
 
^^^ To push back on that a little , why is it that in every racing class in just about form on racing that driver's use both feet? It is for situations that you can't ell are about to happen. No one can "tell" if some drunk or highed up moron is about to pull out in front of them EVERY TIME. Safety isn't a short cut and either is using two feet if it's safer. Yes, most of us were taught to look down the road not just in front of us as we drive but to go a step further some of us were taught to mostly , yes mostly look on the sides of the road further out or past the apex of the curve "through" it to see what potential hazards await us, a dog in a yard or a kid playing or whatever . That doesn't have anything to do with one or two feet being used, drive how you feel safer.

As I said, it's to set up the chassis through weight transfer, for entering turns, controlling the apex, and exiting turns.

Do you do that on the street, in your 55 year old muscle car? Or your minivan? Maybe your work truck, then...?
 
Depends on the machine...shifter karts, F500 cars, yup...no choice.
Front wheel drive on a track, pretty much always. Street stuff, not so much.
I never even think about it my feet just do their thing, there's really no downside
to it just one more available tool of car control
 
So you take your foot off the gas when braking.

Makes you wonder how many driving through storefront accidents, almost always caused by elderly drivers, are due from them 2-footing it.
None, because every car's braking system is designed with enough capacity to bring a car to a full stop at speed one time even under full throttle.
The elderly storefront cause give away is it requires a sudden full throttle failure at the exact same moment as a full sudden one-time complete braking failure, of which the odds of both occurring out of the blue are nearly infinite.
