PS440S25170786 is on my 68 coronet rt with 440 of course.
Get that 2517 is date of June 17 1968.
Thought all engines made in Trenton but PS doesn't google? What is S and 0786?
My understanding was 1968 didn't have serial number on engine
Gary

That is an engine part production # much like the transmission. The S is probably a human error.

Look on the top rear near oil sender on bell housing edge of block. Will face up to your eyes with car all assembled. Last 8 of VIN

This number is on the flat part of block right in front of bell housing driver side below starter
Yes, and its not a Vehicle Identification Number.
The # you are referring to is more of a part #.

See post # 3 about VIN numbers

That’s the engine assembly number.

S = Special to distinguish the 375 horse assembly from the 350 horse assembly. Different cams.

0786 = assembly number for that day. The 786th engine assembled.

Google says....

You had R for regular gas, P for premium and S for special . S was used for HP motors in Dodge R/T and Plymouth Super Commandos

Google is wrong.....

S does not indicate the year. Indicating the model year would be redundant as we know the assembly date.

How does Google explain which external stampings were used to indicate which cam was inside the assembly?

  • (251st day of the 1968 model year)
Also wrong.

Yeh it says 2517 of Chrysler 10000 day calender which started July 29 th 1961.
So date works out. Somewhere said S means special cam?
