Have a chance to pick up a couple of used 440s on the cheap Where is the code to decipher these babies ? On the pad 1 of them reads t 8 440 e . The other has a 7r cppd in a clover type arrangement. I have not seen them, just relaying the info I got. Hard to haggle if you don`t know what they are. Thanx all, DK.

On the 375 hp engines there will be a malteese cross on the pad next to the distribitor...And it will have an HP...The date codes are on the passenger side of the car under were the exhaust manifold bolts up...You need to check the date codes...This will tell you what year the motors are..Check out..

Go to the informational page for a complete list of mopar casting numbers and to figure out what you got..

help

I have the date code for 1 of them .9/65 with a casting 3 of 25364304. That is a 66 440, I think, just don`t have any specs for it. I don`t recognize the 7R let alone the cp
dd
The other I am told is a smogger with T8 440 E stamped on it. Any clues ? Thanx again,DK.

The maltese cross was only used when .001 in undersized main bearings were used on all big blocks and the Hemi. #'s that follow the cross indicate the specific bearings that are undersized and all other bearings will be standard sized. (If it sounds like I am reading this out of a book it is because I am.) It goes on to say that if the letter X appears after the cross, indicates all mains are undersized .010 in. and it goes on to say even more, let me know if you want more.

Every block I have seen has a date cast in the side by one of the motor mount ears. It may be hard to see so the pad may be your only ID possibility. The T8 or 8T 440 I bet is a late model 77 or 78. 2536430 is a 440 block 66-72. The 66 440 should have the very desirable 915 heads. If it's an HP motor the end of the head on the machined accessory boss will have an HP stamped on it. This means the heads have the larger 1.74" exhaust valves. Just more clues to help ID your engines.

Like Matt said, the Maltese cross does not indicate HP. All this time I thought the cross meant .010" under size?

Meep, I think your right on the .010 vs. .001, I think it is a missprint in this book. It starts out by saying .001in undersize but in the same paragraph it states .010in and I didn't notice.

The Maltese cross is .010 on the rods and mains,an hp block should be 68-72 and should have an E for the forged crank stamped on the pad if I am remembering correctly, should also have hp stamped on the block,Any hp engine goes 4 about $400 if its locked up,to about $650 out here,73-78 about $400-$500 all day, even find them running 4 about a $1000 but those engines are pigs stock, like 230-275 hp from what I've seen.If im wrong someone will correct me.

The cross doesnt meen anything as far as the rod bearings are concerned unless it is followed by the letter R. The letter E stands for a `69 model year engine, I think all cranks were forged from `68 to `72.
