That makes sense. Yeah washers seem like a less than ideal solution, especially on a spendy build.

Yeah, you are talking about the chamfer on the shaft at the top of the slot correct? Is the gear height and shaft depth roughly the same?

The gear has a small chamfer, the shaft/slot does not.

Copying this method with the Hughes shaft/gear Hughes melonized 1.540" (gear height) - .140" (depth to top of slot) = 1.400" Also measured the depth from the top of the gear to the bottom of the slot which came to .439"

I was thinking if the gear was able to move up and still be meshed with the gear on the cam it would not be timed the same due to the gear being helical. Like when you drop the gear in and it rotates as it meshes with the cam gear

Would the distributor be out of time once it moves up as well?

I was thinking the same thing, just the load to spin the distributor. It seems like a bigger concern could the gear/shaft moving up to fully seat into the distributor shaft could be the bigger issue and cause timing issues, like furious70 mentioned. I could also be thinking about it wrong.

Do you have a way to measure the distance from the bottom of the gear to the top of the slot the shaft sits in? It seems like that would be where the difference is based on what the machine shop is telling mopardemon

Yeah, its actually just the complete trans they sell. I dont do a ton of gear hunting between 2-3 but the stroker might help with that some, its pretty happy anywhere about like 1800rpm. Passon ratios are 2.66 1.59 1.0 0.8 OEM OD ratios are 3.09 1.67 1.00 .73
