They are so fickle these cars. My GTO had the usual induction system: high rise intake & 4bbl carb. 9.8:1 CR. I had to use 98 octane [ similar to your 95 ] to stop det. Had cold air induction, cool running engine. Could get det on very hot days.
Switched to a completely different induction...
What model Phoenix? I always wondered where mine went.
There are odd looking marks on the gaskets emanating from coolant holes. Crack in the deck?
If you need heads or a block, have a mate in Syd would likely have both. PM me if needed.
There are better cams than the stock 340 cam because the factory had to compromise.
My advice: it is real easy to put in a cam that is too big. It is much harder to pick the 'right' cam that gives you the extra performance but not at the expense of drivability.
You have already picked, nice...
You could hear det with your engine using a particular fuel. So you know & can hear it [ hearing still good ]? If do not hear det now with a cheaper fuel, go for it.....
I have seen tests where higher octane fuel made less HP than a lower octane fuel, so no point spending extra $$ if it does...
Also, some clutch brands have a heavy duty & a severe duty clutch. The HD clutch has more internal slippage, so that the fan spins at a slower speed. If you are chasing an overheat problem, use the SD clutch.
When you have the filter laying horizontally, you are going to create an air lock [ no fuel ] in the top half. And you are not using all the filter area. It will work OK, & I doubt it is causing your problem. Looks like an Edel carb, & last number of part # is a 6.
So what carb?
What other...
Exh leaks do not knock, they tick. Could be the rod brg, cracked piston. A problem with the piston pin is usually a double tap noise. Either way, I would strip it because it ain't gonna fix itself...& much worse damage could ensue if left...
I suspect a small gap between the p'rod pump arm is causing the noise.
Carter/Edel carbs will quite easily tolerate 10psi of fuel pressure, but the float level must be reset....because fuel pressure changes the fuel level.
The 426 Max Wedge fuel pump was rated at 6-8 psi & the Carter AFB carbs...
Pert has a HEI style module that provides multiple sparks to 7000 rpm. No other company has this. Those who believe in Pertronix should ask them: is it an inductive system, CD system...or something 'else' ...
Why not leave the eccentric in place? It causes no harm & provides the correct dimension for the retaining bolt. If the car is sold, the new owner can use a mech pump if desired.
