    RPM varies wildly small block

I rebuilt this engine in '99 and put the rockers that were on it then back on. I proceeded to drive it everywhere at 120mph after that and didn't do them any favors. I was looooong overdue for a new set, it turns out. As far as did this improve the idle, it did to an extent but you're spot on...

Yes! I posted a quick follow up to stay online for the ages. Everything I did yielded incremental improvement. The ignition box and carb were the biggest.

    RPM varies wildly small block

Hi All, It's been about 9-10 months from my original post. In case anyone is looking at this thread for conclusions. YES, I did get it sorted out and have a perfect idle. I'm not quite daily driving my car but I drive it quite a bit now. I did not have burned valves or any type of cylinder...

    RPM varies wildly small block

It's been a few months and I finally got back into this thing. Who had their money on worn out valve train AND bad lifter AND fuel pressure issues AND defective cap and/or rotor? Turns out it takes more than one problem to have the RPM wander up and down 450 RPM at idle. I'm very close to...

Hi Kurt, VERY cool RR! You don't want anything that came off of this car... trust me. Plus I'm putting it all back on. It only works because I'm building a disgustingly awesome ratrod. Lol

Very cool chart! I'll see what I get once the new rocker assemblies come in.

Will do on the new rocker shafts. I own a vacuum gauge but haven't relied on it much. I'll be sure to read up and the chart Mick56 posted is going to help get me started. I wish I had a known-good carburetor to throw on there for diagnostics. I may go back into mine to clean it up (again) and...

    RPM varies wildly small block

Thank you for these suggestions, they're a GREAT set of leads. Truth is I've owned this car for so long these are my own mechanical failures coming back to haunt me. As kid in my teens & early 20s on the weekends I would run this thing hard and put it away wet. And then drive it to work and...

    RPM varies wildly small block

This might be related. Have new rocker assemblies on the way. The really loose one was severely elongated, a few of the others aren’t great either.

You have a rebuild on your hands but with it you have freedom. My 68 was in about this shape when I hauled it home. You can restore it to factory or build it triple black. Tasteful small block or a big block with a blower sticking out of the hood. The possibilities are endless and no matter what...

    RPM varies wildly small block

It's a mopar drop in electronic distributor kit. I did recently figure out I've been driving around at 35 degrees of initial timing, and the car's always had a miss to it. This entire event has taken place at idle in park. I can hear the cyclical miss at higher RPM though. The plugs all came out...

    RPM varies wildly small block

I did play with the timing but it was in an effort to resolve a miss and high idle. Apparently I've been driving this thing around at 35 degrees of initial timing for a while! I'll continue to work the timing / idle mixture.

I've actually got the advance disconnected, I'm experiencing this crazy RPM bounce at idle with the advance port plugged.

    RPM varies wildly small block

Hi, I’ve got a strange one on my hands... my 360 is climbing and dropping by as much as 400 RPM at idle. I’m curious if anyone has ever seen anything like this before. 360, 30 over. Street/mild purple cam. 16 degrees initial timing (approximate, it jumps around with the unstable idle)...

    Does a 69 4 door rear seat fit a 68 2 door Coronet?

Naturally the monkeys working the scrap yard managed to set the upper seat frame on fire while cutting the hinges out with a torch... I passed.
