Strut rod front bushings

I have a '68 Coronet R/T. Today I noticed that the front strut rod bushing is torn on the passenger side. The car has less than 1000 miles on it since it was restored. I know that it has a 2 piece bushing, so I'm wondering if it's possible to remove the nut & cap, and replace the front part of the bushing without having to pull the lower control arm and strut rod from the car. Has anyone done this on a '68 - '70 B body?
 
Well, I just rebuilt the entire front end on my 68 Sat. If you mean the bushing on the nut side, I don't see why you couldn't just put a replacement bushing on that side. However, if you mean on the inside bushing, the rod can be removed from the control arm but I have not done that myself while the control arm is still in the car. There may be enough room to unbolt and remove the rod. I wouldnt think trying it would hurt anything. The worst that will happen is you have to take the LCA back off to repair then most likley realign. I reinstalled mine with the rod bolted into the control arm. Hope that helps.
 
I have 2 ideas about what may have caused it, but I can't confirm them until I take it apart.

My first guess is that they didn't torque the nut to 50 ft. lbs., so there wasn't the correct tension on the bushing.

My second guess is that they may have left out the metal sleeve that goes inside the 2 rubber halves.

A member of the Dodge Charger forum told me that he's successfully done this on his Charger, so I ordered the bushings and I'll give it a try.
 
The real question should be, what caused it?...

I replaced the front part of the bushing today. I found that the front nut had not been tightened properly on either side, so I think that's what caused the failure. They are both tight now, and I installed the missing roll pins while I was at it.
 
Cool,that saves you alot of dickin around, mine are the same so it's handy to know it can be done that way.
