1966-up Mopar 383-4 air cleaner

This factory air cleaner was removed from my 80K actual mile 1966 Charger with 383-4 engine. It is in REALLY nice condition. There are some water spots on the cleaner in the picture but they wash right off. I don’t know how many years they used this particular air cleaner or on what models but I am sure it is correct for some other models as well. Hole size in the base is 4.25" If you have a larger aftermarket carb on your car you can simply use an aftermarket base plate and this air cleaner top will cover it and no one will know the difference.

Should be same as 273 Commando air cleaner, except black instead of chrome....

They used several air cleaners depending on options, time built and assembly.

Not saying your wrong but this is what came from the factory on MY 1966 Dodge Charger with 383-4. It is an original 80K mile car with original engine.
 
I have had questions about this air cleaner and thought i would share the response i just emailed to another interested person.

The smaller unsilenced air cleaner became available in either 65 or 66 on the 273 hipo. it was used into the late 60s on 383s and 440s. The single snorkel was used on the 361, 383, 413, and the 440 LoPro for several different years. There is also a dual snorkel similar to the single snorkel that began in I believe 67 and was used on A/C equipped cars including the RRs and SBs with factory A/C because those cars did not get the standard 383/335 but rather the 383/330 engine. There is a lot of confusion about air cleaners because Mopar moved the usage of these cleaners around from year to year, model to model and on top of that substituted what was the norm for what was available at any given time rather than slow or stop the production line.

Also here is the picture of the air cleaner that came off of my 80K original car and 383-4 engine.

Same here. The small one came on my fathers' '66 Charger 383-4bbl that he bought new in early '66.
 
The unsilenced air cleaner was available in 64 383 and 273 Hip Po packages!

This is what air cleaner I have seen on 80% off 66 383 chargers.

They also used a single snorkel but I believe that had something to do with noise in highly populated areas....not sure.

the only air cleaner for the 66 Charger with the 383 was the smaller unsilent style as pictured below. Any single or dual snorkel air cleaner that is on a 66 Charger with 383 is not correct.

You are incorrect.

There were many cars delivered from the factory with either the single snorkle or the dual snorkel. My car is a proven example of a single snorkle as it was original engine, carb, air cleaner etc. and I have documentation back to the original owner on my car.
In fact the air cleaner that was specified from the factory with hipo engines with A/C was the dual snorkle.
 
no, I'm not....but if you want to continue to believe that you sold and original air cleaner assembly with a single snorkel on it from a 383-4bbl, you can do that.

Well, I was selling Dodges NEW 1968-1974 so I am pretty familiar with what was what. How about you?
 
Daryl, Im going to have to tell you that Bryan has lived and breathed 66 CHargers forever. I know you know your stuff, but even my 66 and 67 background , which goes back eons, will favor the small cleaner as 'correct'.
 
The old guy down the street has a '66 Charger that he bought used in '67 that has the single snorkel air cleaner however his car is a 361-2. He swears it has been on the car as long as he has owned it. I have lots of pics of 383-4 cars with A/C that I have researched. Did the California CAP cars come with the "small" air cleaner also? Do you know what year the state of California started it's noise restrictions on motor vehicles? I'm asking because you'd think a "non-silenced" air cleaner would not be available on a vehicle sold in CA (if the restrictions were in place) I inherited my Dad's '66 Coronet 383 4-bbl convertible when he passed and he always said the original air cleaner (missing for 35 years now) was the small one you mention.
