Rusty - Shafts are the same, its the shifter pad location. Shifters are located at different points in between the two body styles. Many B/E 833's come with dual pad registers so they can be used on the both body types.
When the E body came out, the dual shifter patterns appeared. The earlier B trans have the single pattern forward mount pad. Didn't need anything else until the E cars showed up.
Can I swap tailshaft housings between 2 transmissions?
I have a 1970 superbee trans with 2 shifter mounting points. gears are dead!
I have another good trans but the tailshaft is different. no rear mount. the body mount on the bottom of the good trans seems to be further to the rear of the car...
can I swap out the tailshaft with the correct body mount to the transmission box
Yes you can. fit is all the same. However, be prepared to install the likely larger "308" bearing on the 71 & later extention housing compared to the pre 70 housing.
