That's not right, the factory rear defrost button goes there.

it looks like the speaker faber but ive always seen it at the bottom of the dash on B body's

Interesting, thanks for sharing that thread. My radio does not work so I can't quickly confirm if it is a speaker fader (although the car does indeed have a rear speaker). Maybe this location of the fader is an early production year anomaly? The car is a Jan 8 build date. I'll have to dig in a bit it to confirm its function, and see if it looks like a factory installation.

could be i know 68's had some early production changes like the style of the ash tray and so on

It definately look like a speaker fader but looks like someone "customed" it up a bit. I think they should be on the radio bezel in 68. I have one that looks factory that is on the 68 rallye radio bezel
The separate bezel section is on all 68 rallye gauge cluster bezels I believe ... even with no rear defrost in which case there is just a blank there to match.
