Is that even legal?

I don't know saw someone selling one ok Facebook today and I've seen them at swap meets. Sold as something to put on the wall basically but who ever buys them probably has different intentions.

Don't think you can re- vin a car "legally"... Kind of like money laundering... Fraudulent I would think...

It's been discussed many times. There is a legal way to get a VIN tag for our cars. It requires a build sheet, fender tag and correct body stampings to confirm the legitimacy of the car. Then you can get a new tag. This guy obviously doesn't know about it or is missing some of the requirements or is trying to pull a fast one. Perhaps he really just lost his tag and thinks any 318 car tag will be fine, but doesn't realize it's not legal. I sent him a note on how to go about it.....we'll see if he replies......

Edit: 14 minutes and he contacted me.

So who is stamping out these correct VIN tag reproductions?

Cowl Tags

Patent Plates

I know a guy that got one made. He told me it was not easy. They wanted to be absolutely sure the car was real. Perhaps cowl tag refers to VIN?
Cowl tags are similar to fender tags, Gm doesn't have a Vin on them I believe but references trim etc...

Sounds very sketchy...as in illegal. For the Federal standards, see 18 U.S.C.A. § 2321, § 2[a]; and 18 U.S.C.A. § 511, § 2[a] and § 5

Changing a VIN is illegal everywhere. Replacing a damaged tag is not changing a VIN.
Note, After speaking with this fellow, he will have problems ahead of him as he has no documentation. He will likely have to get a "custom" VIN issued by the authorities up here.

With no vin tag the burden of proof is upon him to prove ownership to the Statewhich is a long drawn out ordeal,
Well it looks like he's in Canada so there no telling what their regs are...

They only make you jump through a hoop a dozen times to get a re-vin here. Only catch is that you need to douse your self in gas first and light the hoop on fire. More than likely he bought a car sitting in a field without an ownership and a bill of sale only, they make it almost impossible to get an ownership if that's the case. It's a shame the the system is the way it is, makes people try things (illegal) that they shouldn't have to if the system was more accommodating.

I think a lot of that has to do with the junker/crusher law too....backdoor EPA crap. They don't want old cars on the road.
Does anyone know where else Mopar stamped vins? Frame, core support ect?

I know it is a big controversy with people and states. Some states don't care. I mean in some states you can use a new dynacorn body with your old vin. I always think it is so funny you can take an old car and replace roof to floor and all four corner's all on the same car. You can replace the frame and firewall too. BUT DONT YOU DARE TOUCH THAT VIN ON THAT DASH!!! LOL it don't make much sense to me. But what ever. Some states you have to have a VIN inspection before getting a title. (Just a ploy for extra money) My state it don't even matter if the car your registering is in the state. If you have a title in hand they will issue you one in your name. 6.00 and it is done. Sure makes life easier.

Oh and before anyone comes on to beat me up on my post I make this disclaimer: I don't come here to debate ANYTHING. Just saying that in a country which claims " To be unified" The laws differ from state which makes it hard to say what is or isn't correct. All you can do is follow the law where you live. Nuff said .. Dreamcatcher out...

I agree that it should be hard to re-vin a vehicle. With the amount some of these cars are worth, there are plenty of unscrupulous people looking to fake one to sell. I am surprised the vins aren't fixed to the upper cowl, but i suppose someone would cut it off and sell it just the same. I have also seen these dash frames on ebay for ungodly prices because they are from a desirable car.
