I've been cleaning up the spears (removed from car) and noticed they have a clear coat that is flaking off. Was the clear coat original? How can I remove it without scratching the aluminium? After polishing, should I coat it with lacquer or another product?

Also, who sales trim attachment hardware for the spears? The blob of goop under the trim nuts; what can I replace it with?

Thanks

John Compton

Soda blaster will remove it and not hurt the Aluminum.

That clear coating is Alodine (spelling?), kind of a plating process. It's on all the outer aluminum trim pieces, including the grill.

Sport Fury side trim is anodized aluminum. You don't have many options.
You can strip the anodizing and be left with bare aluminum. If you do that you can polish the aluminum. After that you will probably need to keep it polished or you could clear coat it but I've read that clear coating polished aluminum changes the appearance/color.
Or, you can find a place that does anodizing and have it re-coated, not sure of the cost.
Something to consider, either way it will probably not match the rest of the side trim so you might be forced to do it all.

Been here before. There's annodising stripper I've bought at car show swap meets. it a white powder in a plastic jar. Also heard original style oven cleaner will do it.
After it's stripped, you will need to polish it. Once you start, you will need to keep going since they won't match. Joe Suchy in Georgia deals in parts for these cars. Should have the clips. He does have the trim insert once you're done polishing.

You might want to bite the bullet and send them to "The King of Trim" once you strip the anodizing off the trim will go white pretty fast leaving you one more tedious labor intensive job to do. Unfortunately there is no cheep and easy fix for aluminum trim. I don't know how much longer you will be able to get part re anodized due to EPA restrictions. P.S. they come back looking brand spanking new.
