I have narrowed down the issue with my dome light and brake light fuse blowing. It is the console lighting circuit. I isolated it down to that, where would you suggest I look for the short that's causing my fuse to blow? I simply removed that feed wire from the fuse block so everything else will work. If I try to reattach it, it instantly blows the fuse so somewhere there is a short. I'm thinking about pulling the left kick panel and going from there unless someone can suggest something else. Thanks!!!

Sounds like the wire is pinched in the console or perhaps the shifter if its an automatic, Also, not sure about your year, but the wires on my 73 to the console ran under the carpet, so maybe its grounding out on the floor boards.

Try separating the connectors in that circuit, so you can get to each wire end. Then, with an ohm meter, from a good body ground, test each segment of the power side. If you get connection, there's your short. Remember there's a ground wire in there, too...so keep track of each wire.
The way those circuits are wired in, is somewhat complicated.

Always start looking in the area you last touched.

Most wiring defects are caused when the wiring is disturbed.

Thanks for the tips guys. To clarify, it's a 69 four speed console, so it's the courtesy lights only that are shorting. I didn't work on the car, it simply went out after I washed it....but I do have a minor windshield leak in the left corner that drips into the car. Maybe water shorted it?

The wire you removed from the fuse block is Pink colour right? (this is a fixed +12 Volt)
When you remove the left kick panel you will find a white socket with a yellow and pink wire.
My Coronet has no console so i don't know how or what/where this wiring is added in to the harness, but the white socket behind the kick panel connects the dome light on mine. (as per electrical drawing the courtesy lights hook up close to this socket, but courtesy wiring is spliced in)
My guess is them wire splices will be there, wiring colours will be same.
Disconnect the car battery, disconnect the white socket at the kick panel and measure resistance between each individual pink wire and ground.
If there is no or low resistance it means that wire is shorted to ground, follow that wire and you should find the problem.

Yes, Wietse, a pink wire. I do have the color laminated wiring chart, but live and in person really shows the lay out. I bet you nailed it. Can't get to it today, but that's where I'll start checking. Thanks again!

I have the digital version but shows all colours by writing.
The layout is sometimes indeed different then expected from reading the chart, but it is not hard to sort out.
I had to do a lot of troubleshooting and repairs as a lot did not work on my car, in the end i changed all wiring harnesses as it was cut up and did not feel comfortable with that in the car.
So i already had every wire of the car in my hands, i really learned this from this car tbh.

Anyway, good luck when you get to it and we will hear what you find in there!

Not sure if removing a light bulb from one side of the console at a time would help you narrow it down or not. But worth a try.

I read on this forum that a socket spring can collapse and ground the socket, so there's something else to investigate. I'm going to check the wires behind the kick panel first and go from there. Thanks for reminding me!

I'd remove the bulbs from the console and dome light...
then put in a fuse.
if it doesnt blow, put in one light at a time.
on the 69's they have the "so called" 5 sided "star" connector behind the left kick panel. It is really rectangular and two rows of three and they only use 5 of the 6 slots.
good luck

The thing that strikes me as odd is the dome light works. They should be tied in, however one pink wire to the fuse block controls the courtesy lights only it seems, and if I connect it to the fuse block....pop goes the fuse.

You are correct. One pink wire does feed the courtesy lights but it branches out to several connections. The fact that the dome light works tells you that that segment of this circuit is fine. You have narrowed it to the console lights and/or its harness so you are on the right track. Now you just have to inspect that complete harness. Just remember the pink wire is full time 12V and the switched ground is delivered via the yellow wire. You have a direct ground to the pink wire of the console harness. It could be a bad socket, or lamp, or the pink wire could be pinched somewhere. You're close. Hang in there.

I take a light bulb and socket hook prongs to it and put it in place of the fuse that has the short to ground, sense you have voltage on one side and ground on the other the bulb will illuminate then start unplugging stuff until the bulb goes out, when it goes out you found the short to ground
