My 64 Fury convertible has rusted through the support that holds the windshield wiper pivot on the drivers side. It is located underneath the dash, inside, but the firewall is solid inside and out.

Is the only way to fix this, is to remove the windshield and dash and weld in a new piece of steel to support the wiper? Any other way?

That's a very typical place to find rust on early "B" bodies. The original owner of my '64 Polara used fiberglass cloth and resin from under the dash to address the problem but that is pretty much a red neck temporary fix. He might as well used duct tape and bubble gum.

The only correct way to fix the problem is to cut the rusted metal out and weld in a patch panel, and removing the windshield is necessary since you would be welding so close to the glass. Patch panels are made for that section, https://www.c2cfabrication.com/products/1963-1964-dodge-dodge-440-lower-cowl-panel but they're a little expensive.

I'm cheap and I don't have all the metal forming equipment required, so I made my own from several small pieces of 18 ga. steel. When all the welding was done I sealed the area and coated it with POR-15. Then welded the upper cowl panel back in place. A little body work and that was it.

Good luck with your repair.

I did a whole thread on this recently. I have a 1964 Fury station wagon. My firewall is pretty solid too, but the 62-65 cowl area is prone to rusting out. It may look ok at first glance but there is very likely a lot more rust you cannot see trapped inside. There is design flaw which allows debris and moisture to get trapped between the upper and lower cowl, mostly on the drivers side.

I would highly recommend you remove the window although you could possibly get away without doing so.... but the welding heat would probably damage the window gasket and you'll want to repaint the cowl anyway.

You don't need to remove the dash, but that might make it a bit easier (I did NOT remove dash)

My original windshield was all scratched up and pitted so I left in in place while doing a lot of the work because I didn't care if it got damaged ( it helped protect the dash and interior from grinding and welding.) Then removed it once I was almost done... did primer, paint... and then had a brand new windshield installed.

If you have any questions let me know... I just did this so its fresh in my mind.

The cowl area itself is very solid. It is just the wiper support underneath that is rusted - almost like there is a panel under the dash that the wiper pivot is attached to, that is rusted, allowing the wiper pivot to flop around and almost fall through the cowl (which it would if not attached to the arms underneath). Apparently it got moisture underneath the dash and rusted the support????

If the manufacture is Sherman run and run away fast.............they are poor fitting junk.

yes that's what I'm saying, your lower cowl is rusted out. there is both an UPPER and LOWER cowl. the lower cowl is where the wiper pivots mount. look underneath the dash with a light and you will probably see more evidence of rust. around both wiper pivots and maybe even other places like directly in front of where the radio is... where the lower cowl is spot welded to the firewall.

look at my thread there are tons of pictures to help you understand what I'm saying, I discovered exactly what you have, and then had to repair it.

my cowl doesn't look bad on the outside at first BUT its basically destroyed underneath where you cannot see. sorry to have bad news but yours is probably rusted out too. I would check the passenger side also.

I also did not use the Sherman panels because I heard they fit like junk, I beat out my own and pieced it together.
