I put in a humphugger console when I changed my bench to bucket seats. The console has a built in USB port. I ran a wire under the front carpet to come up under the dash. The lead for the cigarette lighter is right there. I can splice into that line or even disconnect it from the cigarette lighter, which I will never use, and just put a male connector on the end of my USB lead. So the question is, since the lighter wire is energized even with the key off, will the LED from the USB port drain my battery over time. I'm pretty sure it won't, but just double checking with you guys.

The LED will draw such little voltage your battery won't even notice.

It is actually a current flow that drains the battery. If you don't drive the car on a regular basis, yes, it could eventually drain the battery. Why don't you just connect the wire to a yellow (light power source) plug under the dash? Then it would be a switched connection and you don't have to worry about it.

It will take a long time , I think your battery loses that much just setting un used.
But I would do as 69bee and have it on a switched power source

When I put the car away for the winter, I disconnect the battery and put it on a trickle charger, so not worried about that. The other 5-6 months it is always connected. I can't imagine that the led draws more power than say a dash clock that is always energized. I also like having the port available without having to turn the key to the accessory setting. I'll give it a shot and see if I have any problems starting the car after it sits. Thanks for the input gents.

If you keep an eye on it, it should be okay. I assume it would be about 500mA to about 750mA depending on color (frequency) and intensity. You could always connect a power source and an ammeter and check it, so that then you would know.
