how do you know if you have the correct power steering pump. the car steers like a quick ratio box but its not, its so touchy it scares you, nothing wrong with front end, 1969 coronet r/t 440, gear box about 4 years old

Sounds to me like the steering gear is boogered up. I can't think of a reason why the pump would make a difference. Smaller pulley would make it spin faster larger pully would make it spin slower. Maybe pressure?

Does it have the fast ratio pitman arm on it? Not even sure if you could put it on a regular box or not but worth the look.....

Dumb question.. but how long have you been driving a '69? I know even I hate the PS in the '70 Bird compared to driving my '69 Bee with manual steering. 35 year old son would probably ditch the Bird for being too "twitchy" compared to his 2015 Fusion.

A fly could land on one side of the steering wheel and cause you to run off the road. A pinky finger is all that was needed to turn a Chrysler product. They were so easy to steer that they had to stiffen them up in later years.

All the old original power steering boxes are one finger steering, they turn quick and are touchy. Have you had an old Mopar with power steering before? The feeling is like you can't keep it in the road with both hands on the wheel. My suggestion is if you can't get used to it, send the PS box to someone like Firm Feel and get their stage II or III upgrade.

If you have a problem I'm 99% sure it's in the sector. The pump should have nothing to do with it as long as its pumping fluid.

My '69 is the same. I liken it to driving on greased ice. Absolutely effortless, but I fear an evasive action maneuver.
