Light Weight Batteries

If your running one of those blue voltage regulators I'd ditch it. I was getting 2/3 years out of batteries running them. Good ol' Costco warranty saved the day. Those regulators are listed race only. Guys swear buy them, not I.
 
Do you have a voltmeter letting you know the charging system output? Usually summer about 13 1/2 volts and in winter a little higher. If you have a test voltmeter use it to check voltage at the battery with engine running at idle and at a higher RPM. I have a 05 Ram that I got 14 years out of original battery and never put a charger on it. But if I started it I would be taking a trip to make sure driven enough to keep battery fully charged. My SRT Challenger got 9 years out of original battery.
 
I am assuming since you mentioned a lightweight battery,you are using it in the stock front location in a car you race, or are trying to make handle.
I have no input on the specially light batteries, mine are all moved to the trunk, or started out there. That's where I want the weight.
Lots of people have gotten great life out of optima's. I got nine or more out of mine, but I put interstates in this last time, well under half the price of the optima. (Needed two, diesel pickup)
My car with the truly horrible battery access, will get a new optima red, when the current one dies.
 
Is the 20-30 pound difference for a cheap lightweight battery going to make a big performance gain over a group 24 or 27 for a street driven car? Obviously, there's no financial gain.
 
I had one and gave it away after one winter. For a track car I get the weight reduction but for anything that is street driven they fall very short. The cca are almost not existent. For a big block or small block with some compression they aren't reliable in cooler temps period and if your car occasionally suffers from summer time hot start/ slow start issues or your carb bowls go dry they don't have enough reserve.
 
So the problem with the DUI battery is not how it works, it starts the car great, it just doesn't last a year.
It has been suggested that I need to leave a trickle charger on it all the time, maybe that is the case.

My car is a fat girl. I have the weight down to 3740, and am always trying to drop weight. The new battery drops around 40 lbs off the front, totally worth it for me, if they would last.
 
Car batteries have a heavy protective shell, to reduce weight that is removed. Heat and vibrations can penetrate them a lot easier and shorten the lifespan. Also smaller size is less total amps and therefore shorter life. A battery tender definitely extends the life
 
I can add that relocating to trunk may extend life due to less heat exposure.
 
I needed a compact battery that would fit
behind the seat inside the truck cab. These
can be mounted in any position except
upside down. It's a AGM battery, and is sealed.
It has 641 CCA's @32 deg/F. 23.54 lbs.
So far, it's cranking over the BB just fine.
