How close dimension wise is the 72 grill to the 74 grill? I know the hole for the lights on the 72 are round. In other words will the 72 grill fit the opening of a 74 grill? Thanks

I put 71 grills in my 74 with very little effort.

IIRC there were two screws per side that didn't line up with holes.

I simply left them out.

72's will fit just fine with at least 2 of the holes aligning on each. You can always make tabs(drill new holes on the tabs) for the other 2 holes and with JB Weld attache 2 nuts and screw in the grill screws.

Or get the grill brackets for them. I think is just the outer ones as far I recall. Inners gets 4 holes provisions each so I guess is just about change the nylon inserts to match?

About drill the holes... good idea, but the inserts could be fitted too, just using a file to get holes squared and install the inserts for the screws like originally are.

Aside that I guess the only diff after this could be the headlights fitting deeper into the grill opening for them, due the larger gap between body and bumper for the fillers.

But hideaways requires a full hardware... and remove some other parts from the actual 73/74 bumper setup

Not if I run some string through the firewall at just the right angle and tie it to something on the dash where it's easy to reach in the dark!

They interchange without much trouble as I have the early grille on mine and also still have the 74 grille in case I change my mind again. I don’t really care for the 74 grille.

Well I'm not talking about the electrical part to lift up the headlight doors LOL... That's in fact is pretty much the easier part

73/74 grill looks much better IMO with the SE bars.

(and non-OEM red trim on them)

Hideaways fit too.......just say'in. Hard to beat hidden headlight front ends Imho.

1971 Charger standard grilles are the best on 3rd gens out there.

Hard to beat!!

Here's how I rank them (personal preference)
Rankings of the grilles are to the Charger they belong on.
1. 1971 Base
2. 1973-74 SE
3. 1973-74 Base
4. 1971 Hidden
5. 1972 Hidden
6. 1972 Base (no offense to the OP)

I'm with this list, except I'm not sure between the 73/74 SEs and standards order.

( I wouldn't change my 74s for the 71 anyway... preffer keep correctness on this )
