I'm trying to find the date of the spare tire in my 71 road runner.

DOT date codes were not phased in until 1971.
Prior to that Goodyear used an internal code system.
In 1970-71 it had 8 digits. Like yours.
The 8 digit system from January 1970 until the mid 71 year.
After that it went to 11 digits and will have 3 numbers at the end of the DOT code.
Week and year of production.
Normally on the back side of the tire.
It changed to 4 numbers in 2000 .

Thanks for the reply. I actually used this as a spare a couple times back in the 90's. It's time for a new one.

So I inherited an '01 Forester from my late wife. This last time in the shop I told them to replace all the tires including the spare. I specified made in USA tires. I told them to throw the old spare in the back because it was a new tire. Yeah, new alright, date code is 1999. 2 years older than the car, original spare, gonna be great when I show it?! Another 4 years I can put it in an AACA Show!

That tire was made in the 8th week of 1970 at the LA plant.
That's good info. My car was built in August 1970 at the LA plant. So this could be an original tire for the car. I'll have to check the build sheet cause I had assumed that the original would be raised white lettered.
Looks like it's an original tire but probably not worth saving.

T86 is the code for 14-inch steel wheels wearing F70-14 tires with a white stripe sidewall. Your wheel/tire are probably the original!
