Several years ago I installed the borgeson steering box in my 68 charger with a 6.1 hemi. I like the way it drives but when I slow down to park I have little steering assistance and make a lot of whinning from the power steering pump. I have tried several different types of fluid with no change. Does anyone else have this problem and found a solution

I've heard this before. It seems to be a characteristic that many of them have. Functionally, the Borgeson unit is excellent. The noise they make is considered normal.

It won't help much.. but i installed mine in november and finally drove it yesterday.. 40 minute drive and zero noise or issues and i love how it drives now. only complaint for me is the pump gets VERY hot.. 180 on a 65 degree day, will be adding a cooler for sure.

Yaeh a cooler, sounds like a good idea...

I’ve had an inline cooler in the red car since just after I first swapped in a 440 24 years ago. Hot California sun, aggressive driving and wide tires do conspire to heat up the fluid.
I did a Borgeson swap 2 years ago on a Plymouth and added an inline cooler that I pulled from a minivan in a junkyard. Low cost and effective.

yeah, i need to do it.. just.. lazy right now and forever it feels like :) The borgeson setup was expensive but it's amazing how much tighter the car is with it

A good rebuilt original mopar box is not terrible but still nowhere near as responsive as a Borgeson unit.
Yeah, it isn’t cheap but it is a definite improvement.

Did you buy the pump from Borgeson directly?

I literally just went though this same situation. Installed the Borgeson box + pump and same results, drives great when cold and then after it warms up, the steering gets hard a low speeds. Added a cooler, nothing. Changed fluids 3-4 times, nothing.

Finally after all this, I talked to Peter Bergman and he sold me a P/S pump with his "tune up" done to it(how he sells them), and all of my problems went away. Feels great now all the time.

thanks for this! My box was installed not too many miles ago and I'm running a new (rebuilt) Saginaw pump. Less than 300 mi so far, but no noise or issues. I'll keep this info about the tuned Bergman box on file as a backup in case any future issues occur.
