I have a motor oil leak on the 66 383 Charger oil filter/pump. Thought it was the new oil filter I put on but replaced that and it's still slowly leaking. I was able to get a wrench on the mounting bolts and they each turned about 1/4 turn but did not solve the problem. Looked in the Dodge service manual and the diagram shows a gasket on the block side but not on the cover. Is that correct? Also I see a plug and gasket that I have not tried to tightened. Did not see it with all the power steering stuff in the way. I believe if I remove the battery tray I could get to this unit but would like to ask those who have been there before. Anyone have experience with a leak in this area? If I can determine the problem I might have to make a gasket unless they are available individually. If it's the plug then maybe I can fix that with a new copper ring gasket. Also need a new oil pan plug/bolt. That one has a slow drip as well. Ideas appreciated.

My pan bolts leak too. Have cinched them up but still acts like a Jag. I keep flattened cardboard on the floor where I park it. Plus I have to drop in a quart every 500 or so. So...a freshened up bullet is in its future. Have a line on a used 75 440 in Delano. Hopefully it will not have any, or much, taper in the bores. Do just a basic overhaul. If overhaul, will get the block decked some for square up and a touch more on the heads, along with usual head stuff, to help get some compression out of it. Will use some steel shim gaskets too. I'll set the take out aside for future stroker. If the "new" one needs boring, I'll postpone that project until I have the dough for stroker with better heads, cam, headers etc. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm guessing you have a smaller displacement engine and would put a 440 in place of it but why not stroke the engine you have? Seems to be a popular upgrade when engine work is needed. Just curious. Maybe because you can build the 440 and drop it in when the other comes out. That way not down a long time.

It has a 440 in it currently. What I'm hoping to get on the used engine will be a no to very low taper bore block so I can do a re-ring, bearing, head redo, pumps, cam/lifters/timing components etc. Get it ready to go and swap it out over a weekend. If it turns out the "new" unit is going to need boring, then I'll back burner that until I can swing the bigger money and keep topping off the oil. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I hope that works out for you. I plan to order the oil pump parts as soon as I get thru mowing. weed eating and burning up here. Burn permits are expiring this weekend. My old body is tired but I gotta keep going. This Charger I bought a year ago is keeping me busy with service/repairs that was not done over the years. You mentioned the pan bolts and I can tell you every bolt and nut on my engines was loose. And oil seeping from numerous places. This pump issue should be the last for awhile, I hope. Really hard to see down there exactly where the oil is seeping from but I'm pretty sure it's the pump housing. Power steering fluid was a little low and there might be seepage there too but I don't believe it's serious. Had to adjust the that too as there was a little too much play in the steering wheel. Half turn took most of it out but I may do another quarter turn while down there.

Going to be ongoing I believe. Almost 60 year old car with a bit over 100K miles. Gotta expect some work to be needed. Just hoping the engine stays good.

It's tight working under there (I usually do it from underneath) especially with power steering. I'm guessing that it is the gasket between the pump and the block. But it could be the gasket under that cap for the pressure relief spring. I don't even know if you can get to that under your car with the pump on.
The gasket between the pump and block is Melling M-63016.
The gasket for the oil pressure relief spring cap is Fel-Pro 3122.

I don't think it's the o-rings between the pump and the top cover. Ya know, let's start all over. Since you don't really know where the leak is, and since you have to take the pump off to replace the base gasket anyway, just order the Milodon 21591 gasket set and the Fel-Pro 3122. (Both are cheap.) That gives you every o-ring and gasket. Take the pump off, replace all the gaskets and o-rings and put it back on. Then you should be fixed. If you are going to take the battery tray out this will be easier from the top. The hardest part is keeping the base gasket straight reinstalling the pump. Take your time. Do it right.

A thought...Are you sure you don't have a filter seal stuck on the pump, and you now have two there with the new filter in place ?

.. or like when I did my wife's Formula S 383 and the WIX just leaked. First time I've ever had a bad filter seal..

I did and always do check when replacing oil filters so I'm positive I do not have a stuck oil seal from an old filter. I thought maybe the filter I put on after getting the car last year (a genuine reproduction MOPAR bought from an after market source) might have been leaking but I put a new WIX on and have the same issue. So I would not think that would be the issue with two of them. Plus the slightly loose pump bolts.

There is a lot of oil/grease/dirt buildup below on the suspension. I have been wiping that off as much as I can with GUNK and rags. Thought at first it was from the power steering unit. But now I'm thinking this has been leaking oil for some time. Also it's a mess when changing the filter because of the suspension in the way and oil gets inside the A arms and everything else. I can barely see the oil filter housing from below with the filter on. But was able to get an end wrench on the bolts and nudge them a bit. Like I mentioned, 1/4 turn, 1/8 inch at a time. Turn wrench...repeat.

The link ckessel sent shows the parts but not the brand. Has the O rings and gasket. Once I get the battery tray off I might be able to see where this oil is coming from. Want to find the oil pan bolt as well, maybe from the same supplier, but I did see it on another site so I know it's available.
