Hello BBody Buddies: I finally took a close look at this yesterday and it was pretty sloppily done, somebody used all different length 5/16 fuel hose for all four fittings, I also think I have the wrong gas tank for my 71 road runner as the gas tank fittings are 1/4 inch and the vapor separator has two 1/4 inch and two 5/16 fittings which is mounted behind the LR wheel in the housing.

Also the four 1/4 inch fittings come out the front instead of the side. Is all this really necessary? The line that comes out of the vapor recovery box that's supposed to go up to the passenger side valve cover is disconnected under the passenger seat and has been that way for how long as I've owned the car more than five years. Can I just plug the four gas tank fittings and remove the vapor recovery box then if so will the gas tank properly vent with just the gas cap?

Yes, the venting is necessary. If all the lines are plugged then fuel will spit out the filler neck. You are correct about the tank vent locations being in the wrong location. You may have a 1973 tank as the venting system was different.
I removed the vent cannister that's in the wheel well on my 71.
I did loop 2 of the vent lines like this.
Gas tank vent tubes.jpg

The other 2 lines were run up to where the cannister was and zip tied to the bracket that the cannister was mounted to.
Previously I ran the 2 lines up and under the drivers side tail light, but found out that fuel was being siphoned out of the lines probably because there was too much turbulence in that area behind the tail light, so I relocated them to the wheel well.
As long as the 2 open lines are higher than the top of the gas tank you're good.
If you can run the 2 open lines to above the shock mount crossmember that would be a good location too.

Please Help! My (wrong year?) gas tank has (4) 1/4" fittings at the rear of the tank and my vapor separator tank has (2) 1/4" and (2) 3/8" fittings then the one with the short black hose is a 5/16" fitting that goes to the metal line that runs up th the valve cover vent. It was sloppily connected with 5/16" hose all different lengths and kinked. My question is how do I know which gas tank fitting goes to which vapor separator tank fittings? It was 1:1 left to right as found but obviously can't trust it was done correctly. I am going to buy new 1/4" hose now and use (2) 1/4" to 3/8" adapter and put short 3/8" hose:

Back of Fuel Tank - I was think of just putting (4) 1/4" x 8" long hoses on (like the one in picture) and venting above shock mount and remove vapor recovery box altogether?

Robert,
This is the style of fuel separator used with the gas tank you have.

There was a post on this separator being used.

Here's the link for the thread on this subject.

Gas tanks and vapor separators changed early in production for 1972 B Body

I don’t remember the month of production

1971 had vapor separator inside driver side rear wheel well like you pictured , gas tank nipples on side towards driver

If your vapor separator is rust free , and you have the correct covers for the wheel well and hoses

The correct gas tank for 1971 is not an option ?

The size of the nipples are different on the 71 compared to the 72 separator.
I have a 72 separator that I was going to use but the nipple sizes are smaller.
I could rig up some sort of hose adaptors but haven't got that far - it may be a winter time project.

You don't need the vapor recovery tank, but you can't just plug the gas tank vent lines as the tank still needs to vent. Unless it is a race car, I would just use/keep the vapor tank.
