New valve covers arrived yesterday. Edelbrock 4495 chromed steel. These are about one inch taller than stock. Look good. But the annoying tick is still there. And when I first fired the mighty 318 it was more like a clack clack. I think I have a lazy lifter. Have been chatting with Edelbrock about it.
And, the covers only have one hole each, and they are smaller than the stock holes.
So I fired up the 318 and noticed the small valve had a lot of suction. So that managed to fit one hole. The other larger hose to the base of the 1405 carb, did not have much if any suction, so I plugged it, and I plugged the rocker cover. And removed the pipe for filling the oil. Vans have an extra hole for this, which means the new covers do not have enough holes. My task is to extend the oil filling pipe and reduce the size to fit the rocker cover, and figure out what to do with the larger hose that goes to the base of the carb.
I have not read the carb instructions yet. Thought I would annoy you guys first. But I did a test run last night, and we are running quite well, with an annoying ticking sound, and a slight misfire.

You should have the pcv valve on one valve cover and a crankcase breather in the other.
Pictures might be better.

First pic. Stock valve covers. At left is the base of the air filter.
I managed to step down the size of the rubber hose. The narrower hose fits the smaller rubber grommet in the valve cover. So now that cover is vented to the air filter. The PCV valve is bunged in to the left hand cover.
The oil filling pipe. Currently not attached to anything. I need to work on a plan to mount this.
Back to the first pic. It shows the stock round breather for the hose that goes to the air filter. Also the cap for adding oil for a car or truck, and the oil filling pipe inserted in to the front of the left hand cover. I have to remove the engine cover to get access. The pipe allows me to add oil from the front. A small hood opens for this.
These valve covers make no provision for adding oil. Maybe I could make the breather hose and the oil intake, all part of the right hand cover. I think the newer vans have the filler on the right hand side. They have a lot of modern attachments, that make it hard to find the engine.

New plan.
I will drill a hole for the oil filler pipe, forward on the left hand cover. I will enquire about the air breather for a newer model. I suspect they are smaller. Meanwhile there is more air sucking sound, with the hose directly in the right hand cover.
Not sure what that round air cap is called. It is in the middle of the RH cover, top pic.
