DOGS

That's cute...

Mines just the opposite, he doesn't hardly like the dog treats
'milk-bones' assorted flavors or the 'Marrow treats' he used to love either
in the mornings
I'd put 1 of each on his food so he'd eat, he'd scarf down his allotted serving like 2 cups
& 2 lil' treats, 7-ish am, daily (same at 4-pm-ish)
now he doesn't eat it until after my dad gets up & has his breakfast
& dad lets Barron lick the plate with eggs tators toast, or oatmeal, or cereal & almond milk etc.
then by about 2-3pm-ish
he'll finish off (maybe) what dog food, that I put in his bowl at 7-ish am
then he's ready for 'his treats' from dinner, I feed my dad at 5-pm usually
(how many times dad eats you'd think he'd be fat, he's like 135#s skinny,
he was 185#s in his prime, sad to see
)

Baron used to scarf 2 servings of 2 cups, daily of his dog food 7-am-ish & 4-pm-ish
I only put food in his bowl once a day now, like 3 cups (maybe) probably less

my lunches or dinners, he gets a couple of scraps, bites, licks
not much, usually meat &/or trimmings off the meat,
he loves fruit too :realcrazy: all my labs have
(I rarely do breakfast, just coffee)
he gets spoiled rotten with
& all 3 of dad's meals, & all his lil' snacks/cookies or ice cream, in between
lays his head on his/dad's knee, gives him the puppy eyes
he gets bites, dad's a softy

now Baron,
he doesn't eat his food/treat at breakfast or rarely does
(not dog food or dog treats anyway)
he nibbles on it all thru the day, mostly like he pushes it around
like he's looking for something better
he'll eat anything human food, no matter the time or even if he's full

he's just figured the system out, better treats/food for humans

he's 15 months on the 15th, this month...

Typical Lab, chow hound,
it's strange he's just not eating as much dog food
as he used to, he's/Baron's not starving by any stretch... he's 100#s
I'm about to change to adult formula dog food too,
been mixing in the puppy food with adult 1/2 & 1/2, for a couple (2) months now...
Time to go adult only food, same brand same flavor...

What is his usual grub? We've had issues in the past with several dry brands. There were a couple, Solid Gold and Merrick, where they would go to eat and then back away from it. There was something hinky in it.

I am greeted every time I go to this one site......by Security.

His normal dry food in Pro-Plan/Purina brand Sport formula
(all my Labs have eaten that)
Puppy, & adult formula
(I think it was adding the 2 together It was a different flavor or texture & size, Lamb & Rice)
he's started to eat it reg. "sort of now"
&
it was a 45# bag Adult & a 34# bag Puppy combined, so a couple month old now
so it may taste stale too, he was gong thru a 34# bag of puppy food in about 25-30 days
this combined has been around & open (I do close it off & put a clip on top)
but I think the gross/amount could have gone stale,
dried out or something 79#s is 2.5 months of food...

He will be on the adult formula Pro-Plan, after this is all gone in the next few days

That's not all he eats either,
he eats a tone of snack & people food
especially from my dad, 1/2 of dad's (he's 88 y/o) meals the, dog eats eventually,
after dad picks at it 1st
Plus what ever treat/s, that I give him too, meat scraps & veggies & fruit, he loves apples
so his slowing down doesn't seem as bad as I was thinking
the past few days he's been eating pretty much normal now, just less
He was a very spirited eater as a pup, gobble down the whole serving in a couple min's
he doesn't do that now, he's also 15 months not 6 months now too...

If not I will do a different food,
he seems to be sort of back to more normal now, it has been hot the past week
a lot hotter than it was earlier, so that could have an effect on it too
just speculation, I have no idea what's in his brain, just experience with many other dogs/labs

after Elvis (9 y/o passed) my last dog started not eating, & died of liver cancer...
unrelated to his food, a bunch of the pups in his litter & mother died from some form of cancer
"genetics I believe",
he was a great dog, with bad genetics/he inherited, it sucks...

I was sort of panicking/worried a bit, & probably/maybe lil' of me over reacting etc.
didn't want a repeat of that...
He's strong as an oxen, just about as big too...

thanks for the response
less treats too

I also tried some of the grain free foods, 1# sample bags, from my vet
he didn't like any of them, at all

Maybe, once he's gone through the current grub, buy it in a smaller amount. It will be more money but possibly less likely to go bad. From there, it's experiment time. Our Vet pushes Hills of course, especially the vet only rx stuff. The last bunch we tried, a weight loss type, we were able to buy it from another source. Still $100+ a bag. We went through 6 bags and no weight loss. The dogs itched like a mofo. Had to get shots for that at over $100 each. Twice. Our local small biz pet store had a similar grub, way less money, but no weight loss. This was mostly for Toga. So we said F that and went back to the Darwins raw. Zeke is getting 2.5lbs per day, Toga is 1.5. I was a big Solid Gold user back in 08 or so. When Sissy still owned it, she gave me the lowdown on hers versus others. The dogs then did excellent on it. She was one of two or three that didn't partake in the Chinese junk that was prevelant then. Later on she ended up selling out to one of the big companies who did have problems. After that, their stuff was junk. That was when we adopted Neko. He had dietary issues that took us awhile to fix. He was blessed with 0 tolerance for chicken and rice. It was like throwing gas into a fire for his system. The vet "special" stuff, supposedly would not give him problems, had some of the very ingredients he couldn't handle. About that time we watched the documentary called "Pet Fooled", which was about the pet food industry. Pretty informative. The two vets in the film both fed their brood Darwins. They never mentioned it, but you could see the packaging. We got some of that, no more problems for Neko. Have been sold on it since. It's species specific as you can get it for dogs or cats. My two cats, about 8 years old at that time, looked close to pushing up daisies. They were on Kirkland dry and Friskies canned. Within a week on Darwins, those two were bouncing off the walls like kittens. Cuda, the last of the sisters, is 18 going on 19. The stuff isn't cheap but it works well and is way better for the kids.

Im thinking the heat if hes outside alot. I feed Riley and Thor 2 cups in the morning and 2 cups at night. Always been on Victor dry food. Beef and rice with no problems. 40 lb bag every 2 weeks. And they love their treats at night.

The latest shipment of grub showed up for the kids yesterday. 50+lbs. Got it all put away in the freezers. 3 4 packs for the cats and the rest for the dogs. Turkey for the cats, beef and turkey for the dogs. We get a load every two weeks or so.
