New 10 inch Front Drum and New Question

Hopefully the last question. As mentioned in another post one of my front drums was more than worn out. I received a new one but getting the hub out was a chore. Went to a friend who has a press and we managed to get it out but the drum must have moved in an inch or more before the hub broke loose. And yes I did soak it with Kroil. The new drum fits the hub well but does not have a smaller diameter beginning hole for the lug bolt swedge edge to bite the drum. That bite would only be about 1/8 inch. So this means the drum will be like the rear when you remove the wheel. I think this is okay but just wanted to be sure I'm not missing anything. It's otherwise snug.

Also I removed the spring around the old drum. Are these necessary? Never quite understood what they do. The opposite drum was replaced in the past and the spring was not replaced.
 
Does the hole in the center of the drum fit snug on the hub?

And you might want to check the hub flange for trueness after pressing on it. The swedged studs need to be drilled out not pressed.
 
The spring dampens "harmonic vibrations" that can cause squealing and noise issues when braking. You could run without, but why bother removing them.
 
As far as I can tell the hub is still true. Put the old bearings in it on the bench and no issue there. Then installed it on the spindle and when turning I don't notice any wobbling. It also fits snug in the hole on the drum. Very slight wiggle from the studs. Would have felt better if I could put a new hub on but don't know if those are available. Bearing cap went on okay too.

As for the springs the old hub has a very slight indention to keep them in place and the new hub does not. As tight as they fit it might stay in place but....is it really worth taking the chance?

I'll put a run out gauge on the hub while turning and see if there is any distortion.
 
F/U. Follow up. Not the other words. Ran a dial gauge on the hub three different ways and it's surprisingly true. Once the wheel was on I checked again on the tread to see if there was any runout. Fine there too. Now have to drive it and see how the brakes work. Have some wearing in to do too.
