I myself grew up with classic heavy metal. I still love the bands from the 80s. One of my favorites is Megadeth. Last month my buddy, who owns a collectibles shop in CT, tells me to bring my wagon over and meet 2 original members of Megadeth. I am ecstatic. Dave Ellefson, the bassist, who by the way has arguably the greatest bass line in metal history (Peace Sells But Who's Buying), and Chris Polland the other lead guitarist. We all hung out, took pics and then went for pizza. It's almost surreal hearing them talk about other musicians like it's totally normal for them (which it is). My 65 Belvedere wagon (the Creep Wagon) with me at the top left, my buddy Chris, lower left who owns the shop, Top right is Dave Ellefson and lower right is Chris Polland. Center is our friend Matt who's writing biographies with them and the girl is Skye who sneaked in for the photo.

Later at the pizza parlor. The kid cooking our pizzas can out all humble like and asked for autographs. He was in awe.

Too bad Dave just can’t seem to get over being let go from Metallica. I’d like to see the original line up of Megadeath get together for at least 1 show.

That is a cool story...thanks for sharing and the pictures. We always thought we were too old when Megadeth hit the scene. We were listening to Sabbath, BOC, Hendrix, Zeppelin, Skynyrd, Mott the Hoople, Yes, Deep Purple, ETC. Only later in life I heard Angry Again and then started watching some of Megadeth's videos. I watch their videos far more often and have a respect for what Dave Mustaine and this band accomplished. It's quite a feat when a band makes it as big a Metallica did and the guitar player singer songwriter they kicked out picked up the pieces and made it big as well.

I’ve been a Megadeth fan since the beginning and have a lot of respect for Dave. If any of you get a chance to see it, the documentary “The Decline of Western Civilization, The Metal Years” has a great interview with him and the band before they hit big. It also features one of their best songs, “In My Darkest Hour”. It really hit home with me when my relationship at the time was dissolving.
The lyric:

Did you ever think I get lonely
Did you ever think that I needed love
Did you ever think to stop thinking that you’re the only one that I’m thinking of

You’ll never know
How hard I tried to find my space and satisfy you to.
Things will be better
When I’m dead and gone
Don’t try to understand

I'm not a metal head or megadeath fan however I do think what you had happen is cool. I would have done the same for the music I am into.
Save those pix forever.

I consider Megadeth to be superior to Metallica in the "Big 4" of thrash metal; I know I'm in the minority
with that opinion, but Mustaines' writing is just so much better, more complex, more melodic, more heavy...
Mustaine has recently announced he's hanging it up - the next release will be the last, followed up by
farewell touring in 2026.
Given the dudes' age and health trevails (some quite similar to my own), can't blame him - he's had it.

Polland is pretty amazing; Ellefson is a cornerstone of Megadeth, too.
Unfortunately, they've both done some stupid stuff that preclude still being with the band.
Somebody posted they'd like to see the original lineup together - that would be impossible, of course since
Gar Samuelson (original drummer) has been long since passed on (liver failure from alcoholism).

I always preferred what it considered to be the "classic" lineup of Megadeth much more anyways:
Nick Menza (drums - RIP), Marty Friedman (lead guitarist, a fantastic one), Dave "Jr" Ellefson on bass
and Mustaine on rhythm/lead guitars and vocals (he's also considered the best rhythm guitarist of the genre').
I was lucky to see them in this lineup a couple times back in the day and Menza especially was a BEAST live...

Anyways, best to those gents. Hope life is good for them these days.

That's a great song. Too many great ones to list.

I have always completely agreed. Metallica gets old to me. I can take maybe 3 of their songs. Megadeth like you say has so much better writing in lyrics, arrangements, hooks, melody. I recall an interview where the other guitarist was saying that Dave told him to go back to the drawing board and come up with something new and inspiring because the licks he was bringing, while technically competent, were too much of the same 'ol stuff. The Rust in Peace and Countdown to Extinction albums are masterpieces to me.

Yeah, Marty on lead with Dave on rhythm guitar is an unbeatable combination. Years ago one of the many guitar magazines rightfully called Dave the best all round guitarist; he can kill it on lead but generally plays rhythm and lets others take many of the solos. Marty composed what is considered one of the finest, most tasteful solos in rock music, the solo in Tornado of Souls.

Happy to see the mention of deep purple They were quite a talented band. I liked there music from the early days to the late days. I recently looked at some poles on the best rock guitar, drummer, singer ,and keyboard players and all of deep purple’s members show up nicely in them.

Dave Mustaine was on the Shawn Ryan podcast a month or so back. It was a very good podcast, a lot of good background info.

I think a lot of these musical stars are really delusional though. For instance Dave goes on and on about how Megadeath was known as the most “dangerous” band. I put the word in quotation marks because when Shawn (obviously a fan) asked him what kind of dangerous stuff they did, the worst thing he could come up with was he punched a guy in the face in the limo once. Dave didn’t seem to realize he was talking to a combat veteran who had faced real danger.
