I'm trying to install a new lock on my 72 glove box. I know there's a tab that has to be depressed to lock the cylinder in to keep it from coming out, but it seems that the cylinder is too long. The same is true for the old lock. I can't push it in far enough to get the tab to engage. Without this, you can simply pull the lock out. It appears my latch is worn out, but Im not sure that's the issue. What am I missing?

1) Make sure the latch on the grey part is closed, as if the glovebox was shut and latched.
2) Insert the key into the new lock all the way.
3) Slide the new lock into the grey latch mechanism as far as it will go.
4) Remove the key from the lock.
5) Depress the tab shown on the far left in your last photo, and the lock should slide in the rest of the way. When it's in far enough the tab will snap back out into the square hole you see.

Yeah, I found a video that gave me the procedure. However if you look at the last picture, you can see where the cylinder bottoms out in the latch. Even depressing the tab, the cylinder won't move any farther.

Old cylinder same length?

"The old cylinder i could pull out too." Are you saying the old cylinder did not fit correctly prior to removal?

I couldn't find a '72 Body Service Manual, below is from a '71. See if this helps. Sorry I just got home or I would have posted this earlier.

I did one a few years ago on an e-body, my memory is a bit fuzzy but seems like I had to jiggle the key a bit to get the lock back in after installation step 2 below. I installed it in the locked position if I recall, but it took some jiggling.

Yeah the old one I could just pull the cylinder out of the latch with a little bit of a tug. The new one is acting the same way. That's part of why I'm replacing it (and I didn't have a key for it). I'm going to get my calipers out tomorrow and measure to see if it's physically possible to get it inserted all the way.

I got busy over the last few days so I just now had a chance to look into it more. I measured the depth of the latch and there's physically no way for the cylinder to go in deep enough to lock in place. Additionally, the locking tab is too wide to fit through the slot (see the first picture below). Could it be possible that I have a latch from a different vehicle? I wasn't the one who built the car and I wouldn't put it past the builder to install whatever he had lying around.

Well I'm out of ideas. Maybe call someone who sells the parts, they may have dealt with this issue before. Try Classic Industries at 1-800-854-1280.
