Check your fuel lines

1968 Dark Green Poly 383/727 fuel line burst and with it 6yrs of work.

That sucks for sure but there has to be more to the story. Electric pump and higher pressure? Stock steel lines may rust and drip but don't burst because there is almost no pressure in them. Just a little suction from the engine driven pump.
 
Toolmanmike is right.. There is more to the reason for this happening. Seriously doubt it was a stock fuel delivery system is capable of causing a fuel line to burst.
 
Only time I've seen a fuel line 'burst' is when someone used regular fuel line in an efi application. And it wil let go with a vengance.
 
One thing to recognize for us codgers.... these are not 10 years old cars that you can wrench on, get running, and then assume everything will be fine. To be safe, you have to go through everything. Would you have fired up a 1923 Dodge in 1980 and then started driving around assuming everything was ok? That is the equivalent of working on a 1968 Charger in 2025!
 
One more reason why I hate seeing the use of a lot of rubber fuel line hose instead of an oem pre-bent steel line (where applicable).

Wouldn't surprise me if that's what happened.....but how much psi will a new regular fuel line take? IIRC, my mid 90's Dakotas put up around high 30's.

BTW... I carry a fire extinguisher in all my cars.
 
When buying rubber fuel hose get the barricade hose from gates. It will stand up to modern ethanol fuels. The regular hose will crack all around the hose like a tire out in the sun.

Rock auto has it for $1.74 a foot, and the regular is $1.28 a foot. Working pressure is 50 psi. Well worth 46 cents a foot more.

Don't forget the rubber hose at the fuel tank and on a C body the rubber hose at the rear of the subframe.

Man, I just installed my whole fuel system. Now I am going back and re-checking all my clamps one more time for good measure! My pump operates at 12psi then regulated down to 5psi with a return. Don't see a world in which a line would burst at those pressures, but leaks and/or abrasion on rubber lines can DEFINITELY happen to anyone.

X2 on always having a fire extinguisher in the classics.

EFI hose? 100 psi if I remember correctly. Reg hose? No clue, maybe 20?
 
Mechanical pumps produce up to 10# but you only need 5# and the pressure is on the engine side of the pump. The supply side is suction. TBI systems us an electric pump and they put out about 15#. EFI uses a higher pressure system. 30-60# but the norm is around 45#. They use special lines, hoses and fittings to safely deal with the high pressure. The injected system pumps are in the fuel tank usually so the supply lines are under pressure.

I'm talking about the hard line. I've always called flexible hose....hose but that said, the mid 90's Dodge's flex lines were able to take at least 50psi for the injection system on those.

I know lots of Ford owners that had cars go up in flames.....starting with my aunt around 66 with a 64 Galaxy sitting out in the parking lot where she worked.
 
Gotta use hose rated for the fuel and/or pressure being used. Go beyond the rating needed if possible. I like using EFI/E85 rated if it can be had even for carb applications. Especially the E85. Always great to have a built in cushion when you get gifted with sketchy fuel.
