Early 392 transmission

For years I've been trying to decide the best way to put a standard transmission(4, 5 or 6 speed) behind my '58 Imperial 392. Recently I've read about the NV3500 being an almost bolt in application. I already have a 727 with adapter in my '67 Belvedere. I'm worried about gear ratios. The car already has a 4.56 gear set in the rear end. I read where the NV3500 first gear is 4.04. Would this transmission work with the gears I'm running and still be drive able.

You wouldn't need first gear.
4.56 X 4.04 = 18.42

Now a 3.91 and 727 would be
3.91 X 2.45 = 9.57

So you could have 2.76 rear end with the NV trans
2.76 X 4.04 = 11.15 that's better.

Just simple math, run some numbers.
 
The Dakota is 3.5 I think. My power wagon has a np435 6.68 first, 4.10s and 36 inch tires. I usually start in second. First is just to low. My old 93 Dakota 4x4 had an ax15 and V6. First is supposed to be 3.83 wth 2.33 second. Stock tires. Not sure on gear ratio. I loved that set up.
 
The NV 4500 is a truck trans. Bulky and heavy, 200lbs. No way it would fit without major surgery. It's a tank. 1st gear is for heavy load take off. Start out in 2nd when the trailer isnt hooked up. Fine used in a dually for towing heavy loads. Not in a car.

OP mentions an NV3500. That trans does not have a very high torque capacity, especially if the goal is to be installed in a heavy car.
 
It would be cheaper and easier to swap the rear gears for something more street friendly, even with an overdrive transmission and tall tires on the back she's going to revving pretty high at highway speeds. You're also going to need the flywheel, the hub for the pilot bearing and the hardware to mount the flywheel for a manual trans swap. Also to put one of those NV series truck transmissions in a car is going to require the floor and crossmember to be cut up and modified, a straight drive or overdrive 833 will bolt right in with factory parts.
