Do you have the spring in the lower hose? I had the same problem once. That fixed it. You could rev the engine up in neutral and watch the hose collapse.
Do what you want. But I converted every R12 car to 134A and feel good about it. It's cheaper, easier to find and that makes it better to me. The cooling is the same. Plus the tree huggers love me.

Because of the circumstances I think you did the right thing. I saw an enormous money pit coming and a lot of labor/hassles. It probably would have turned into a nightmare. The new owner will enjoy it.
It appears to me to be an old Top Fuel block. (Since it looks like it has been converted to 1/2" side bolts with a stroker crank and aluminum rods.) In Top Fuel you used to run the block until it cracked, then replace the block. There were many hundreds of these blocks used up in the 60's and...
