measuring piston to deck clearance on 440 source dished piston

The heads are not 78cc any more. They might be less then 70. I bought a CC kit to check the heads myself when I get them back from the machine shop. The cc kit arrived a few days ago. I opened it up to see what I bought only to find the buret broken. Summit is sending another buret. I bought a...

measuring piston to deck clearance on 440 source dished piston

OK guys, this is a quote from the insightful Forest Gump, "stupid is as stupid does". Yes, I am the stupid. I was on the exhaust lobe. At least I was on the odd side of the engine. I got on the intake lobe and measured everything again. At 0 - 108.5 ICL A2 - 106.25 A4 - 103.5 A6 - 101.75 A8 -...

measuring piston to deck clearance on 440 source dished piston

The engine is on a stand. Heads are still off. I am done playing with it, just setting the ICL back to 108. I played with the timing set till I finally just mapped out the different positions. Put some match marks on the block and cam gear to see how much the gear was actually moving in each...

measuring piston to deck clearance on 440 source dished piston

Understood. Degreeing the cam looks like rocket science to most people, me included. Special tools are needed, which a lot of people do not have. Thats why the average person lines them up dot to dot and done. It is a starting point. I have to dig deeper with this engine. I have a degree kit...

measuring piston to deck clearance on 440 source dished piston

Lets see, dot on the cam gear gear is aligned with the dot (0) on the crank gear. no advance, no retard. Been like that forever.

measuring piston to deck clearance on 440 source dished piston

It is installed dot to dot. That is how I took my measurements.

measuring piston to deck clearance on 440 source dished piston

I am going to CC the heads myself when I get them back. Like Ronald Reagan said "trust but verify". Then I will know exactly how much head gasket I need. I expect to be around .070"

measuring piston to deck clearance on 440 source dished piston

I just went through a cam degreeing video from Britney. Link below. With the cam straight up the ICL is at 90, i want 108 asper the cam card. That is 18° retarded. This kind of rings a bell from the first time I did it. I think back then I had to advance the cam 4° to get the 108 ICL. Does that...

measuring piston to deck clearance on 440 source dished piston

    This is the cam I have Lift - 543 int 540 exh, Dur - @50 234 int 240 exh. 112 LSA 108 ICL

    Thanks guys. Will check that.

measuring piston to deck clearance on 440 source dished piston

Now for degreeing the cam. It wants to be on 108 ICL. That's where I put it last time. It was not straight up to get it there. I don't remember if it was advanced or retarded, but I think it was advance. The torque down low was outrageous. I would like to move the power up the rpm band and loose...

measuring piston to deck clearance on 440 source dished piston

I dont know how much was cut from the heads by the first shop that screwed it up. The machinist who has them now is going by cc volume. One head was much less than the other. I am calling him today and will get the actual numbers.

measuring piston to deck clearance on 440 source dished piston

If I had a way to measure the actual deck height it would answer some questions. How much was the deck cut at the first shop? What is the actual deck height now? My guess, the first shop zero decked it. Then after the thing popped out a freeze plug and cooked the engine they had to cut it some...

measuring piston to deck clearance on 440 source dished piston

The chambers in the head are pock marked from the detonation. Smoothing that out and enlarging the chamber might do it. Last I talked with the machinist he was going to mill the good head to match the other one. I am calling bright and early in the morning. If he has not cut the good head yet I...

measuring piston to deck clearance on 440 source dished piston

With the new pistons I bought, they have a 27cc dish, 440 source #5074. With the heads both being 68cc now I am going to need a thick head gasket. I can get Cometic up to .120". Using a .095" gasket puts the compression at 10.83:1. The .120" gasket brings it down to 10.3:1

measuring piston to deck clearance on 440 source dished piston

You betcha! I am rebuilding the 505 stroker I had built for me 6 years ago. That machine shop screwed me 6 ways from Sunday. I am using a different piston with a bigger dish. Trying to get the compression down to something managable on pump gas. The machine shop that has the heads right now...

measuring piston to deck clearance on 440 source dished piston

Where do I measure from? I know it right over the wrist pin center of the piston. The 440 source dished pistons sit below the hole in the dish, .012" above the hole at the pad. Should I use the above the hole in the pad area for my height measurement? If so Summits compression calculator puts...

No more high compression street builds for me

I see people doing that, running in the 12's with mild cars. The vast majority of them are running high 13 low 14 on stock 440's. It is much easier to do with an automatic. I could never master the clutch with the 505. Stock clutch was a smoke show. I put in a dual friction clutch which was all...
