One simple thing you can do to help isolate the issue. Unplug the rear harness behind the left kick panel. If it does not blow the short is in the rear harness. If it does blow then its dash forward.
That's the dust boot that is attached to a factory style seal. It does not cause a leak. If it is leaking you need a seal and possibly a tail shaft bushing. Myself I would just replace the seal now and see where it goes from there.
As far as I know self adjusting brakes were not available in 66. However you can update them to self adjusting and they should take the same hardware front to rear.
Every install can be different. Best thing I will tell you is pull the carpet. Get the shifter mounted and cable routed. Remove shifter and cable. Lay carpet down. Mark carpet for cable hole. Either put a small slit or find a suitable grommet to fit the hole.
I said none were I should of said most. Sure some were. But being a DC dealer we had a lot of insight and contacts as to what was going on. DC was a lot more hands on in the beginning and by the mid 90's they were on the way down the drain.
Sure it can work. But you need the full package and the driver to achieve the ET goal. That book was a sales marketing tool promoting the DC overpriced parts. None of the parts made by DC, just resourced from popular vendors.
The side piece is a sail panel. It can be ordered with the headliner material attached. I also believe they can be put in plain and covered over by the headliner. At least on my 69 Charger it could go in two ways.
