How to achieve 425 HP and 500 TQ from a 400 cubic in engine?

I am in the process of negotiating on a 72 charger. The car is a bit of a Frankenstein, at the same time it has a lot of potential. The car currently comes with a 400 / 727 combo with 3.91 diffy. The goal is to make 425 hp/500 tq on pump gas. I also want to run a therm-quad as well as HP...

    1978 440 cylinder head

@Auggie56 on the old smogger '78 if you want to bump the compression up a little, and want to use iron heads, grab a set of "516" castings or "915" castings, they are the early closed chamber heads. Year wise, you'd find "516" on something like a '66 383, "915" were '67. If you want aluminum...

    383 Mopar Rebuild Help

Strip it down to the shortblock and find a good machine shop. I see rust in the bores so it likely needs to be bored .020 over at a minimum. You can bring them the heads and they can recommend options for rebuilding / replacing. Aluminum heads are a good option: 440 source Stealth, Edelbrock...

What to expect from 1970 383 HP

Well, how do you think about 440s since I just got one haha A couple of things though, unless you had domed pistons or decked block and heads a lot, you didnt have 10 to 1 you had low 9 to 1s from what I researched. Also ive heard that there's wild variations in the quality of castings...

    67 Satellite 383 refresh - questions/advice

With your pistons that far in the hole, you need a steel shim head gaskets and some serious head work. You can't mill it to far as things begin to not fit without other machine work. The 383 4bbl 325 hp engine I recently built went back standard bore with all original pistons that were 16...

    Trick flow 240 rabbit hole

That was part of my confusion on the valve gear. They recommend Harland Sharp, adding 1k to the mix. Are there other, options that would work? As we all know, our Mopars creep up on the expenses quickly. I do appreciate your input.

440 Source vs Hughes stroker kit

I had a 440 based 496 that used a 440 source kit. I used a 6bbl intake, hydraulic roller cam and eddy aluminum heads. It has been a few years since the build and I don't own the car any more, so I don't have the cam specs or recall which heads were used. It was a blast to drive. Below is the...

    67 Satellite 383 refresh - questions/advice

...I am strongly considering going with a set of 440 Source “Stealth” aluminum heads and possibly their aluminum dual plane intake. The 440 Source heads are spec’ed at 80cc so the CR would stay about the same unless I make other changes like milling the heads or block, changing pistons or some...

    Trick flow 240 rabbit hole

If you are buying new heads, you don't need new seals, or locks. I use 7* locks on mild hydraulic roller set ups all the time. Also, I would doubt new retainers are required, as a mild hydraulic roller really doesn't need a crap load of spring. It would all depend on which spring you go with...

Open to help here. 400/512 stroker. Herbert hyd roller cam, 485/500 1.5 lift. 64 Sport Fury convt, 4 speed. I've been looking into heads. To 512 or not

Get as crazy as you want with a different block and heads. You could redo yours with an upgraded cam and some ported 440 source heads painted to look stock also. Your car and your money so do as you wish but I would protect the original block and heads if it were mine.
