...see oil dash light stay lit after start up but would go away. But now oil light stays lit. Put mechanical oil gauge on and see nooilpressure. Replaced oil pump with Rockauto Mellings oil pump. Checked that distributor drive was spinning before installing oil pump, which I could feel...
I saw that...what I see at idle tells me no way that is the real problem. Thin oil, bad parts, lack of oil changes maybe. 5.7 may have lower pressure with 5-20 at idle. But so many make it to 200k miles so who really knows.
I guess the oilpressure gauge decided to work again. No reason - it worked, then it didn't work, and now it works again...
Tomorrow will be a different story, I'm sure.
This is our first time out on a street run, but also the first time we've had a full tank of fuel. The gauge isn't reading...
So, when I bought the car, I was told the engine was rebuilt. Don't know if its true or not as the guy lied to me on a bunch of things. Maybe his version of rebuilt was paint it and make it look new. I changed the pump and pickup tube as I figured it was an easy and fairly cheap way to see if he...
Thank you very much. This is a great response, informative and to the point. Many times I’ve posed a question and no one answers or this post gets in a tail spin and goes off the rails.
I am reading the “How to build big-inch mopar small block book” and it mentioned about upgrading the oil pump...
Well my car arrived yesterday and I am becoming a little bit disappointed in it's condition. Lot of oil coming from around the filter/pump area, which was not as bad the weekend I bought it. I plan to clean it up and do an oil change (the current filter says it was done 5/23. I am swapping to a...
Just to make sure, did you change anything else previously? (Engine swap, Trans rebuild? other/different governor, rear axle ratio?)
To know exactly what is going on you should measure the Line pressure and governor pressure to see if they are in specifications?
Mostly, if the original governor...
I been up late researching on everything that has came to mind. The most recent thing that i have been looking up is perhaps my lack of a Oil Pump gasket is causing my oilpressure to not be what it use to be and not providing enough pressure to keep my lifters pumped up at higher RPM. At least...
I've only owned 3 5.7's so not exactly a representative sample - but the '04 pickup is pushing 200k and still
shows middle of gauge pressure, whatever that is (it's a pre-MDS engine).
The '12 Charger R/T (MDS, oh no! :) ) is at 110k miles and indicates around 42-43psi at idle to this day.
I've...
Race engines use oil. No way of checking the level is a recipe for disaster. Personally don’t care how much is in the engine itself. But I am picky about pan level. 7qts is safe. 8qts won’t slow it down. 6qts can bounce the gage when getting after the brakes hard. To get there the engine and...
Not sure about the OEMs do now...
I think (don't know the name) possibly something many had/have
run-in or break-in machines too, OEMs have too
mounting the engine to it, in a big tub like deal (one I saw)
& a shaft spinning it 'under oilpressure'
checking oil flows/pressures going where it's...
The 318 I rebuilt for my ‘79 B100 project will not start. I’ll list specs, then diagnostics I’ve done.
I'm going to err on the side of too much info. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

If u see my above post with pictures it seems that might be the reason cause if I go WOT it shifts bang on ? And the article is about when using an aftermarket cable
Well my buddy came over to help me get the engine started he was the starter man, while I was giving it a squirt of fuel ,started was going well, 180 temp. Started at 70 psi oilpressure, then dropped to 62psi,letting it run at 2k for break-in, but 18 minutes in just stopped, nonoise, no smoke...
When I first bought the car I was hunting down a nooilpressure problem. I checked the pump (seemed fine) and then drained the oil and it came out slow. So I dropped the pan and found this wrapped around the pick up tube.
Adding shims lowers the pressure. Removing them increases it.
If the steering functions fine, the angle shouldn't be an issue. You could put spacers behind the mounting points of the box to square it up. Many others have done that very thing.
There are millions of factory engineered vehicles with roller lifters.
The big block Mopar was never fitted with them. ALL factory LA and Magnum series roller engines had taller lifter bosses that supported the lifters better. They had improved oiling to accommodate the longer/taller lifter...
My situation is I never felt much pressure when I primed the pump. Normally there is a significant amount of resistance when you prime. I have always used 1/2 drive drills because of the load on the drill while priming the oil system.
The drill just kept going with some but not a lot of...
I would like to know the actual failure rate of flat tappet camshafts if that could actually be compiled.
I know of several car guys that have never lost a cam. Most of them have not built many engines and theirs have mostly been fairly mild engines.
I lost 2 Comp Cams in a row in 2006. This...
