Disconnect the pick up. Connect the p/up to your DVM, AC volts, low voltage scale. Crank the engine. You should see from millivolts to a few volts. Zero means p/up or adjustment is defective.
I use 4s in my all iron 455 Pontiac engine & also use 4s in a 487 Ponty stroker that has alum heads. I think next after using carbs that are too big....comes using plugs that are too cold.
Torker intake is not doing you any favours. An Edel Performer or factory intake would liven up the bottom end, might be enough even with low comp ratio, to satisfy you.
The carb on this engine is an Edel. It doesn't have a diaphragm....
You need to find somebody who KNOWS these engines because you are dealing with an unknown quantity.
They would check things like carb float level, ign timing, lifter pre-load, vacuum leak, PCV operation, etc. Those are basics...
