Its definitely not bulged in the middle. Where are the plastic share pins, I couldn't find anything. This is strange, I have a before picture and the steering box looks like it was in the same place and the coupler was almost all the way down.

I dropped the steering column to remove the instrument cluster at which time found that only the 2 nuts on the studs were securing the column (3rd lower bolt missing) and that they were not centered in the rectangular breakaway plastic washers, were away from the steering wheel end...
I pulled the column out and it looks like it may have taken a light hit. The outer jacket looks like it is bunched up (collapsed) just a little. Does the steering shaft itself collapse also?
Any chance your steering shaft took a hit and is slightly collapsed / sheared the plastic shaft retainers? Look for deformation in the mesh section of the column tube.
Don't worry, the coupler shoes cannot be installed backwards.
If the column is too short then I'm afraid your steering column is collapsed.
You may be able to pull it back into position, but it really should be disassembled and repaired. I fixed mine with hot glue. Be sure to mark and measure...
Looks like the column is not collapsed, but appears i have a std box with a power steering column now. Going to put on a power steering box and use this column still.
I have a 69 Charger with power steering. This is a car I took apart 15 years ago. Complete restoration. I tried to install the column and it fits fine to the firewall and dash. Problem is the coupler barely goes on the steering box with the coupler fully extended. I took in back out and apart...
I have 1 buddy that does a temporary fix with a piece of hose the right size. He slices it then slips it over the shaft and up into the column a few inches and then secures it with a hose clamp. Kim

1.Was your car at any point a manual steering gear car?
It looks like someone may have collapsed the shaft to fit in a power steering box. Which would make the shaft shorter but in turn shoving the fatter part of the shaft farther up in the tube past the large bearing.

UGH .... that makes perfect sense. I had the entire column out on Saturday in order to press out the coupler shoe-pin, in order to get the bearing up onto the shaft. Unfortunately, I didn't think to try to pull the shaft to full length (...that's *her* job).
But, perhaps I do have a manual...
When I was pulling apart my steering column for my GTX vert, I noticed the steerting column shaft was collapsed and sliding in an out. I'd like to get it back to the proper length and then drill and put a plastic pin back in it like it had from the factory. Does anyone have the correct length...
There are sheer pins in the shaft. It has either collapsed or the sheer pins have just became brittle and fell apart.they are plastic. Its built in as a safety feature so the column doesn't become a spear.

Well I took the column apart to inspect for a collapsed shaft and the shear pins appear to be intact. If it is collapsed would these stay in the shaft?

I know the guy that had messed with the steering boxes on my car, the messed around, banged around and at some point collapsed the column. I had to repair to put back..
WOW .... I'm measuring from about the middle of my coupler, where I know the shoes are located inside, + about 1/2" to the end of the shaft from the pin that holds the shoes ... TO ... the lower bearing at the end of the column where it comes thru the firewall ... = 7 1/2".
