Distributor-stay with points or go electronic?

Electronic Ignition. If I'm going on a budget, the factory magnetic distributor is a good starting point, and then re-curve it for your engine combination, then use an HEI module on a heat sink (Cheap and simple.) I will use a chrysler type ECU if I need to, but they can sometimes be a problem...

Best heads for a budget 440?

I saw their website, it's 1200 for both heads and then the hardware needs to be purchased too, I don't particularly want to switch to aluminum heads. I'm young but I like to keep it old school. This is gonna be my cruiser after all. I'd just rather stick to cast heads with a cast block.

    Question About 440 Piston Choices

I would choose Icon forged 1000% of the time over KB's at the same price point. If Icons were $200 more than KB's....... I'd still take the Icons. But I was lucky enough to buy three sets of new Ross, for $300/ea, a few years back. Like jewels compared to trw's.

Collector flange hitting edge of trans pan

...on my car, and the collector from the factory hung low on one side. A floor jack permanently fixed that. Edit: chances are the 440 source heads have the same face angle.... but have a raised exhaust, which can certainly mess with header fitment. I had some custom headers for the V8 in my...

If you could only do one...

...a decent cam at the time. Put a set of ported big valve heads on it from Hensley Racing and it became an animal. HUGE difference. 440 source heads are an upgrade over the stock heads for sure. A little extra work will only help. Be sure to check the springs, valve job, etc. They may be fine...

Collector flange hitting edge of trans pan

I'm running a set of Hooker long tube headers on my '69 Coronet. They're bolted up to a set of 440 Source CNC ported heads sitting on the numbers matching 383 block. The trans is a '75 727 with a slightly deeper stamped steel pan. The problem is that the collector flange on the passenger side...

440 Source vs Hughes stroker kit

I build a few engines for people and have built probably 15 mopar strokers in the last 10 years, 440 source and Ohio crankshaft are the vendors I use. I lean toward Ohio crankshaft on higher performance drag car engines, but have raced the 440 source kits as well, no problems, customer service...

Safe HP/TQ Level For Numbers Matching Block?

The 4.25" crank was my plan until I became concerned about longevity / saving the block. I already have a very similar Lunati Hydraulic roller I'd like to use and would be interested in how much 'lope' you have on the 496"? I've been told our cams are on the tame side for these larger stroker...

383 stroker - ex race car motor, will it blow on the street

The main reason that we study history is so that we can learn from our mistakes and NOT repeat them. In 2003, I built a 440 with a 4.15 stroke using a rotating assembly from Hensely Performance in Tennessee. This was before the 440 Source existed. The man on the phone told me that with aluminum...

What Octane Level should I need for 10.5 to 1 Compression?

Like this thread what have you found to be a safe DCR with 91 or 93?, I'm refreshing a 451 that presently has TF240 and want to detune it for better streetability with Iron heads it's going to be a cruising car with 3.23 and going back to manifolds and it will come out to 10.3 Static and 8.8...

512 stroker piston to wall clearance opinions

2618 pistons expand more when hot, .005 is a good clearance in my experience, if they are as tight as you measure it will scuff the skirts. On a racing engine I run them as loose as .007 to keep them from scuffing. Make sure when measuring the piston you do it in the right spot on the skirt...

Need honest opinions on a build

That 361 is saddled with the tiny bore. A 400 with a 3.75" stroke 440 crank is a proven torque mill and at 451 cubes, it is 90 more than you have now. You can build a set of 452 or 906 heads or even better, 440 source aluminum ones painted engine color for the stock look.
