The handles were fine, but I think the gaskets are made from the wrong material. I took about 3 years for the gaskets to go to ****.

Seconded. I restored my non-AC heater box and reinstalled it many years ago. This summer, I removed and restored the instrument panel, installed LEDs, sorted out some wiring issues...and the heater fan control doesn't seem to be spinning up the blower motor. Low and Medium fan speed test OK with...

If the interior parts are similar to the later model year handles Swap them out with the originals I've had issues with the insides on mine and ended up reusing the old internal parts
