AND, your ammeter is moving to the "charge" direction every time you switch on the lights. i.e. you've rendered the ammeter useless as an accurate charging monitor. Using the battery as a power source for the headlight relays is fine if you have an idiot light or a voltmeter charging monitor...

The wire brush doesn’t get into the pitted areas but blasting does. I can still see rust in the pits in your picture, so that’s what you would be painting over. If you’re going to spend the time, blast them.

A shroud makes a big difference.
