I just located the pics below. They suggest the headliner completely covered it and the sail panel was uncovered. There were the clips that were in it. I have no reason to believe someone replaced them/removed the headliner prior, it's been in the family for 45+ years...
I hauled out of Stockton a lot 20 years ago. Slept in my truck at our yard with the windows down and a 9mm under my pillow. Never an issue... but things change.

To the question at hand, the 30's are over. I'd recommend a can or 2 of RustCheck, the red can.
Even if the oil was a good rust stopper, and you were prepared to do the cleaning needed later to get any paint to stick, why pour on used oil if you're worried about the smell? A can of new oil would be a lot fresher and less odorous.
