Looks like the mistake was made with the vin from the factory. The trunk lip does match the dash vin.
When I moved from Maryland to PA they asked for my SS card and birth certificate. They couldn't copy the SS card clear enough so I had to get another one. Came back and showed then that and a birth registration certificate. "We can't take that" I said you were excepting them last time I came in...
I understand what year, I was questioning the orientation of the seal itself. Most seals will have the lip towards the fluid or grease. Mike states the open side goes up. I'm not sure what he might be saying.
I just grabbed a random seal to show the solid side versus the lip side.
I normally used a etching primer on aluminum before painting.

Pay close attention to the orientation of the shoes and the spring. I would doubt that the pin will come out. They're pressed in pretty tight. Bend the tabs on the cover just enough to remove it. They can break off if bent too far.
