If the mating surfaces are really flat than the problem has to be the plug to pan thread fit. If this s a pan that has seen a lot of oil changes than the pan threads may be worn. Solution is to either the pan or use an oversize threaded drain plug.

Here is a way to determine if it is a rod bearing. Disconnect the ignition wire on each cylinder while runnung one at a time. And then plug it back in.

Most clutch companies have a flywheel exchange program. They sell flywheels that have checked for cracks and ground to specs. Very inexpensive for street applications.
Champion J12 ? I don't know what a heat range 5 Champion plug is that you say you have in the engine.
My suggestion is to put a dual plane manifold on it and try a known carb. Rebuilding a carb( putting new gaskets and needle/seat, does noit guarantee the carb is good, only that the replacement...
As it is already out, invest in a good overhaul gasket set and tear it down to a shortblock.
Then you can inspect everything with your eyes. Check some bearings, cam, lifters etc for any type of wear/debris.

You said you checked the rings. How ? If you removed the pistons, it will be impossible to get the rings back in the exact same orientation.
They wear oval shaped so would need replacing if removed from cylinders along with at least a cylinder hone.
Factory procedure is to make sure it is on a level surface.
Set parking brake. Start, let run at least 2 minutes. Run transmission selector through each gear for a few moments ending in neutral.
When at operating temp check level. Should be between 1 pint low and full. ATF+4 fluid.
